Putman creates a externalism thought experiment called twin Earth. The thought experiment is made for one to consider that the meaning or the word of something does not solely rely on the observer's psychological idea of it.That word has its own meaning, in the natural world in it of itself. In the case of this thought experiment the meaning of the word "water" can only be determined when investigating water scientifically and discovering what it truly is. -
Brain in a Vat
A thought experiment to Rene Descartes' argument of the "Evil Demon". In the the thought experiment, one is to imagine their brain is in a vat hooked up to a computer. That the computer stimulates the brain so that the said person perceives that it is in the outside world. That if the brain perceives it is in the outside world, how can the person know if they are not a brain in a vat.

Why There Isnt a Ready Made World
Putnam coined his understanding of realism with the term metaphysical realism. It stated that correspondent relations between terms in languages help us think and talk about things as they are independent of our minds idea of it. -
