    Free-write and Subway Story

    Why Courage Matters-by John McCain
We read an extract from John McCain's book "Why Courage Matters" about Roy Benavidez as an example of a war hero. I was amazed and touched by Benavidez's immense love for his fellow soldiers that caused him to sacrifice so much for them.
  • Interview: Kristi Quillen, Peace Corps Volunteer

Interview: Kristi Quillen, Peace Corps Volunteer
We watched a recorded interview with Kristi Quillen. It showed us an example of a "local" hero and helped us understand what types of questions to ask during our interviews. I was impressed that she dropped everything to go do something that she had never done before and to help others in a way that she knew how. The personal sacrifices she makes everday for others makes her a hero.

  • Heroes in Literature Group Discussion

    Heroes in Literature Group Discussion
We discussed in groups what literary figures we considered as heroes. I thought about the question of whether the character Atticus Finch is the hero in "To Kill a Mockingbrid" or whether Harper Lee is the real hero for writing what Atticus said in the book. This discussion also helped me recall books that I had read before and it helped me pick out the characters in literature which I viewed as heroes, such as Jean Valjean from "Les Miserables."

  • Interview with Mrs. Reyna

    Interview with Mrs. Reyna
I conducted my interview with the American Sign Language teacher at Cinco Ranch HIgh School about Helen Keller. I gained valuable insight on the difficulties that blind deaf people face and now I appreciate the difficulties that Helen Keller had to overcome in her life. In addition, this further cemented my belief that Helen Keller was and still is a hero to the world.
