Henry Manning was born at Totteridge. His father, William, was a very important man. He worked in parlaminent for 30 years. His mother died in 1847. He spent his boyhood in Coombe Bank, Kent. He Attended Harrow School and recieved no accolades for his acedemics. -

Henry attended Balliol College, in Oxford. Here he became a debater in the Oxford Union and then the president in 1830. Here he changed his mind from wanting to become a political leader to a career under Evangelical influences. -

In Oxford, Manning was elected a deacon in the Church of England. This began his official role within the Church. -
Here comes the bride
Henry married a woman named Caroline. She died not long after the wedding. They had no children in their short time together. Manning lived for decades after as a celibate clergyman. It is said that when his dead body was found, he had a locket around his neck with her picture in it. -

Henry Manning took up a leading part in the Church's education movement. -

Manning's predasessor seceeded, so this put him in a positino of greater responsibility. He was now one of the high Church leaders. -
Henry and the Herecy
Manning's Anglican beliefs were shattered the Privy council ordered the Church to institute evangelical clergymen that denied the Baptism had an objective effect of baptismal regeneration. Manning saw this as a herecy. He believed that it was contradicting the tradition of the Church fathers. He also saw that because the secular court had power, then that meant that the Anglican church was just a man-made creation of the English Parlament. -

Manning was named Archbishop of West Minster. Here he built the West Minster cathedral and expanded the system of Roman Catholic education. He did this by starting the Catholic University College. -

Manning played a huge part in ending the London Dock Strike of 1889. -
Spread the word
Manning used his goodwill to promote the views of the Church on social Justice. He reflected these views in the Rerum Novarum which was issued by Pope Leo XIII. This docuement is still used today as the beginning of the Catholic Social Teaching. -
A sad, sad day...
Manning died at the age of 83.
