Once she learned how be able to communicate in multiple ways, Helen came to be a suffragette, pacifist, radical socialist, birth control supporter and an open opponent to Woodrow Wilson. She advocated for people with disabilities, and widely helped the Deaf community develop as a whole.

At the age fo 22, Helen wrote a autobiography about her life up to that point. It would later be adapted to a broadway play and a feature film.
