    Rivers belonging to the Native Americans were given to the American settlers. the people of were taking the sacred land of the Native Americans.
  • The University of Georgia

    The University of Georgia
    The University of Georgia was first chartered as a land grant university. Meaning the federal government donated land for the school. This was the begging of higher education in Georgia
  • Louisville

    Louisville
    The legislature appointed a comission to find a permanent site for a centrally located capital city. The comission was given funds to purchase 1000 acres for the new city. A centrally located new capital would make it easier for citizens to complete state buisness
  • The Cotton Gin

    The Cotton Gin
    Eli Whitney created the cotton gin to speed up the production of cotton. Following the invention of the cotton gin Georgia farmers were able to seperate about 50 pounds of cotton in one day. This made for more profitable farms in Georgia
  • Yazoo Land Fraud

    Yazoo Land Fraud
    Georgia's hunger for land was at its highest point. before a proper

    settlement was made govener Geroge Mathews and some members of the General Assembly slod the western lands to four land companies. When people found out protest were held and Georgia lost all the land they bought. As a result of the public anger the legislators that were involved were voted out of office and all records of the purchase were burned.
  • Land Lottery

    Gerogia began the land lottery. Public domain lands were opened for settlement. The land west of the Oconee River was put up for lottery. Any male 21 or older could purchase a chance to win for a small fee. Land lotteries were held in other states as well and about 30 million acres of land were given away in lotteries.
  • Railroads

    Railroads
    The railroad was a major economic development, they had helped cut down travel times. Atlanta was at the end of a major rail line. This brought new population to Georgia.
  • Baptist/Methodist

    Baptist/Methodist
    Slavery in the south casued division amoungst religous orginizations. Both southern methodist and southern baptist pulled out of their national orginizations and fromed their own churches. In 1845 southern baptist met in Augusta to form the Souther Baptist Convention because the American Baptist Union would not accept slave owners as missionaries.
