Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Leeuwenhoek improved the microscope by polishing lenses and lens grinding, but more importantly, he discovered the existence of single celled organisms by observing pond water and other things such as water him and his neighbors drank. -
Henri Dutrochet
Dutrochet introduced the idea of osmosis. He also came to the conclusion that all living things are made of cells. His idea led to the rejection of spontaneous generation because the animals and plants all had cells, so they had to come from an organism that also had cells. -
Theodor Schwann
Schwann discovered that animals are made up of cells by viewing animal parts under his microscope and also realized that animal cells are different from plant cells. During a discussion with Schleiden he realized that all living things are composed of cells. -
Felix Dujardin
Dujardin determined from his studies of organisms that many living microorganisms are composed of a single cell. He also discovered the cytoplasm, as we call it, inside the cell. -
Matthias Schleiden
Schleiden discovered that plants are made up of cells by studying plants under a microscope. -
Rudolf Virchow
Virchow is known as “The Father of Modern Pathology”. The rumor is that he plagiarized from Remak’s work and stated his discovery as “Every cell originates from another existing cell like it.”
