Harriet Tubman was born on January of 1820. She was born in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her real name was Araminta Harriet Ross but people called her Minty, Moses, and General Tubman. -
Harriet was hit in the head
Harriet was hit in the head with an iron weight by her overseer. She got hit with the weight because she refused to help restrain a slave that tried to run away. The head injury caused seizures, severe headaches and narcoleptic episodes. -
Harriet escapes 1st time
Harriet and her two brother Henry and Ben ran away. Her brothers had second thoughts and went back to the plantation. Harriet went to Pennsylvania, a free state by using the Underground Railroad. -
Harriets last mission
Harriet’s last rescue mission was to free her sister Rachel , and Rachel’s two children Ben and Argerine . When Harriet returned to Dorchester County she found out that her sister was dead and she wasn’t able to rescue her children. Harriet gathered up a group that wanted to escape even though it took longer than usual to become free but they all safely reached Auburn , New York on December 28 1860. -
Harriet joins the Civil War
Harriet joined the union army when the American Civil war broke out. She was a nurse and tended soldiers with diseases and she was also a cook. Later she served as a spy and scout and she was the first women to lead an assault in the Civil War. The assault caused for 700 slaves to be set free. -
General Tubman
Harriet led three steamboats across mines in the water leading to the shore. When the boats got to the shore safely troops set fire to plantations burning thousand of dollars worth of food and supplies. The fire caused for many slaves to escape and overthrow their owners. -
Harriet Marries second husband
Harriet marries Nelson Davis a man who was searching for shelter in her home. Nelson Davis was a slave in North Carolina and served in the Civil War. Nelson suffered from tuberculosis and couldn’t keep a job often and making Harriet responsible for the household. -
Harriets adopted daughter
Harriet never had any children because she was always going to the south and freeing slaves. Then she married her second husband Nelson Davis and they decided to adopt a girl. They named their adopted girl Gertie. -
Harriet joins womens rights movement
Harriet started to promote women’s suffrage. She helped by giving speeches in Boston, New York , and Washington. Harriet worked with Susan B. Anthony and Emily Howland. -
Harriet died
Harriet Tubman died in 1913. The cause of her death was pneumonia. She was 93 when she died. Harriet Tubman was buried with military honors at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.
