Harriet Tubman

The store that Minty was nearly killed by
This picture is a picture of the store that Minty was near when she was almost killed when her master threw a heavy metal weight and missed, hitting her. I decided the year was approximately 1832 because she was about 12 years old when it happened and it is thought she was born close to 1820. I put this here because it was the first event in her life from the photos.
  • A flyer for runaway Minty

    A flyer for runaway Minty
This is an ad that was put out when Minty ran away from the plantation, and her owners were willing to pay money to have her back. I could tell the year this ad was made because it says it in the bottom of the page. I put this here because it happened after she was hit but before her full freedom.
  • Harriet posing for a photograph

    Harriet posing for a photograph
In this photograph, which I have seen many times and is a very popular photograph, Harriet is standing for a portrait. She is standing with a straight, hardened face which makes me believe it was after she ran to freedom in 1849 at 29 years old. She looks a little older in this portrait so I would guess she is 35-40 years old, making the date about 1856 I put this here because she is free but it is also before the civil war, which was in the next slide.
  • Harriet with a rifle, serving in the Civil War

Harriet with a rifle, serving in the Civil War
This picture shows Tubman holding a rifle when she was fighting in the civil war. She did many different things for the Union army but never received payment for her actions. I chose the year 1861 because that is the year the American Civil War began. It is after she escaped to freedom but before she got her union pass on the next slide.
  • Harriet's pass that the Union gave her

Harriet's pass that the Union gave her
Pictured in this photograph is a pass that the Union Army gave Tubman when she spent time in serving. The pass allowed Harriet free transportation on government transports and explains is a very important lady. I drew the date February 19th, 1863, because it states that on the top of the pass. I put this after her holding a rife because the date would be a few years into the war, but before the book on the next slide was writen.
  • A quote from Harriet Tubman

    A quote from Harriet Tubman
In this picture, you see a quote from a book written by Sarah Hopkin Bradford called, "Scenes in the life of Harriet Tubman." I decided to make the date for this photograph 1886 because that is the year in which Sarah published her book, and it is before her death so I put it here.
  • Photo of Tubman's scar

    Photo of Tubman's scar
In the picture, as described by the caption, it is Harriet Tubman with the scar she got in her childhood on her head visible. You can tell the year of this event, 1895, because it says that in the caption. I inserted it here because she was still alive and it was after her book was written.
  • Harriet sometime briefly before her death

Harriet sometime briefly before her death
In the picture shown Harriet Tubman is in her later years of life. She appears to be very old and frail which leads me to believe it was taken soon before her death in 1913. She is still alive but also very very old, so that is why I put it here.
  • Harriet's funeral card

    Harriet's funeral card
This is a picture of Harriet Tubman in what I believe to be the cover of possibly her funeral card. It says she had a long life and it was dedicated to her people, which implies she had passed away. I made the date March 10th, 1913 because that was the day of Harriet Tubman's death. I put it after the very old picture because she had just passed away.
  • Harriet memorial sign

    Harriet memorial sign
The picture is of a sign that shows where Harriet Tubman was born, in Bucktown Maryland. I chose the date 1920 because it had to have been made after she passed away and the year 1920 would be the 100 year anniversary of her birth. Since I said the year was 1920, it would be before the students got their revenge.
  • How students got their revenge

    How students got their revenge
This is a picture of a little article in a textbook. As said in the text, middle school student's became upset when they learned that Harriet Tubman never received compensation from the government for her service. They wrote a letter to Hillary Clinton, and they finally agreed to send the $11,750 for the Tubman Home museum and Library in 2003, the year I dated this event. I put this after the memorial sign because of the year, and before the grave stone because that was present day.
  • Her grave stone in the modern day

Her grave stone in the modern day
The picture depicts Harriet's gravestone. The caption explains that people still leave flowers on her gravestone which is what led me to believe this is a picture from modern times. I put this last because it is the most recent and most modern picture that was provided.
