The Missouri Compromise
Maine becomes a free state and Missouri becomes a slave state. Split the Luisiana Purchase along 36 30 with the North being free and the south being slave. This caused more of a division in the country, which helped lead to the Civil War -
Dred Scott
Dred Scott was a slave who's owner died and he moved to free territory. His owner's wife eventually took him back after he returned to Missouri, he went to court arguing he was a free man.
He did not win the case and was a slave again, this outraged the north. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This law was passed on September 18th, 1850 and was highly regarded by the South. This law meant that if an escaped slave was residing in free land, the slave owner could retrieve the slave from the territory. This influenced the South's morale towards the beginning of the Civil War -
The Compromise Of 1850
This compromise had 5 parts. It involved the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act, California becoming a free state, and a border settlement beween Texas and New Mexico. This helped the build-up to the civil war by further dividing the country. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Breecher Stowe. In a year it had sold over 300,000 copies and by a decade it had sold over 2,000,000. This helped both sides realize how bad slavery actually was, thus helping people decide which side they were on. -
The Kansas - Nebraska Act
This act divides the nebraska territories into 2, Kansas and Nebraska. The debate whether or not there would be slavery would be decided by popular sovreignty. This helped the build up to the civil war because fights broke out at voting, border ruffians were illegally voting, this was known as "Bleeding kansas" -
The Caning of Senator Charles Sumner
In May 1856 , Senator Preston Brooks walks into the Senate chamber and beats Senator Charles Sumner over 30 times with a gold headed cane. This nearly kills Sumner but he survives. Preston Brooks becomes a hero in the south, this helps the south gain courage and morality that they are stronger. -
Lincoln Elected President
Lincoln was elected president of the United States on Nov. 6. Lincoln outran 3 other candidates, getting 180 electoral votes, over 1/2 of the electoral college. This helped the build up of the Civil War by outraging the south that Lincoln was president. -
Siege of Fort Sumter
Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy attacked Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 at 4:30 a.m. . Two days later the Union Surrendered the for to the Confederates. This marked the first battle and the start of the CIvil War -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union after Lincoln was elected. This influenced other southern states to secede. This formed the Confederacy.
