    In 1793 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. Gin is short for engine. It quickly and easily removed the seeds and increased the production of cotton greatly. This shows progress because now the southern economy would grow and would be able to do more things with cotton.
  • Robert Fulton Designs first practical steamboat.

    Robert Fulton Designs first practical steamboat.
    Robert Fulton was an engineer. He was working on a design for a steamboat and finally got it. It was a single cylinder engine fed by oak and pine wood. In 1807 in its first trial in made a four day long trip in 32 hours. This helped the growth of our nation and showed progress because it sped up trade, the time it took to travel, and helped our economy grow.
  • Second National Bank

    Second National Bank
    In 1811 the charter for the first national bank expired and they let it die out. In 1816 the republican majority of congress signed for a second national bank. This showed progress because we had a national bank that would let us have government money to purchase things and to help run the country.
  • New Tariffs

    New Tariffs
    In 1816 congress passed the high tariff tax on imported goods. This made it so that imported goods cost more than goods in the U.S. so that we could keep our businesses. This showed progress because we now kept our businesses and our economy grew even more.
  • Erie Canal

    Erie Canal
    The Erie Canal is a historic canal that connects the Great Lakes, the Hudson River, and New York City. This allowed New York City to become a major commercial center and it showed progress because it was the first ever canal to connect the Atlantic Ocean to western bodies of water.
