  • Period: 510 BCE to 600 BCE

    Direct Democracy in Athens

    Citizens vote directly whether or not they want to pass a law in direct democracy. Although democracy allowed every citizen to have a say in state affairs, only men who were born in the city-state and were not slaves could become citizens. Because it was a city-state that acted as a country with their own government and it wasn’t large as a country, they could do direct democracy. Today,democracy has taken in many countries.

    Battle of Marathon

    Battle of Marathon
    Battle of Marathon happened between Greeks and Persians, at the city-state, Marathon. The cause of this battle is Darius vowed to defeat Athens because The Persian Empire failed to conquer Greece. Greeks won the battle through the Phalanx formation. Pheidippides ran 26 miles to inform Athens of the victory at Marathon, so the marathon race is named after this battle.

    Battle of Thermopylae

    Battle of Thermopylae happened between Spartans and Persians at Thermopylae because of attack from Persian. Spartans fought with 300 soldiers against 10,000 Persians in a mountain pass for three days, but they eventually lost. The story of 300 soldiers is still famous.

    Battle of Salamis

    Battle of Salamis
    Battle of Salamis happened between Greeks and Persians as a continuation of the Persian War, around Salamis. It was a sea battle, so Greeks won. Greeks had very good sailors, because of their location, they sink 1⁄3 of Persian fleet. Winning of this battle made citizen’s right strong and affected through democracy of Athens.

    Golden Age of Athens

    Golden Age occurred in Athens because Athens became very wealthy and powerful as a leader of the Delian League after the Persian Wars. Pericles was the leader of Athens during the Golden Age and he created the strong navy, increased democracy, and made Athens beautiful like the building of the Parthenon. Athen’s economic prosperity led to the Golden Age of culture.
  • Period: 431 BCE to 404 BCE

    Peloponnesian War

    Peloponnesian War happened between Athens and Sparta in Peloponnese Peninsula between. The causes of this war is that some of Greek city-states want to leave the Delian League because Athens became too powerful as a leader of the Delian League. Athens undergoes a plague and Sparta wins the war. Phillip the ll conquers Greece after this war because both city-states weakened.

    Hellenistic Age

    Alexander’s empire combined the knowledge of Greece, Persia, Egypt, and India. It creates a new culture, Hellenistic culture. Alexandria was the most important city for Hellenistic culture and was a city of knowledge for many years, around 323 BCE. Hellenistic Arts are realism and sculptures are realistic, emotional, and tend to show movement. Many mathematicians, scientist, and philosophers studied at Alexandria. These great thinker’s thought still influences many most of today’s studies.

    Conquered Greece and Persian Empire by Alexander

    Alexander the Great, who was well-educated and well-trained as a military officer, became a king of Macedonia at age of 20. He conquered Greece and the Persian Empire ( Anatolia, Egypt, Persia, and India ) because they were weakened by the Peloponnesian War. His empire influence Hellenistic culture.
