  • Herbert Hoover elected

    Herbert Hoover elected
    Ran against Al Smith and won. 31st president of the United States. He was blamed for a lot of the Great Depression. He ordered the military to fire on US army veterans that were protesting. He was not very good politically.
  • Black Thursday

    Black Thursday
    The first major crash that started to worry the investors. Share prices were starting to fall and the Dow was dropping by the day. Panic had not yet fully set in but many were beginning to find out.
  • Wall Street Crash of 1929 (Black Tuesday)

    Wall Street Crash of 1929 (Black Tuesday)
    The crash that caused the most panic, Black Tuesday was infamous and will be remembered today. Share prices were falling on the Wall Street Stock exchange, which causes people's investments to fall too. People tried selling all their shares at once because of the mass-hysteria. Everyone then lost all of their money since that much could not be given back.
  • Dust Bowl

    Dust Bowl
    The Dust Bowl lasted for about a decade. The Dust Bowl was a series of dust storms that would originate in the Midwest and Great Plains. It was caused due to severe drought. They spread all the way to the Eastern coast. The dust storms could make people sick and kill animals.
  • Scottsboro Boys trials

    Scottsboro Boys trials
    There were multiple trials from 1931-1932. Scottsboro Boys were 9 black teenagers aging from 13 to 19. In the first trials, an all-white male jury sentenced 8 of them to death. The International Labor Defense took on the boys' case, seeing its potential to galvanize public opinion against racism.
  • Hoover Dam started

    Hoover Dam started
    Was originally going to be named Boulder Dam. It was built by Six Companies Inc. A total of 21,000 men worked ceaselessly on the dam, 112 of them died from working on it. Was being made to prevent floods and provide hydroelectric power.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt elected

    Franklin D. Roosevelt elected
    32nd president of the United States. A member of the Democratic party. He beat Herbert Hoover by a landslide. Came up with the New Deal to help get out of the Great Depression. Used fireside chats as a way of talking to the public. Created organizations like the CCC or the PWA.
  • First New Deal

    First New Deal
    From 1933-1934. This was mostly focusing on dealing with the banking crisis. This was done through the Emergency Banking Act, the 1933 Banking Act, & the Bank Holiday. The Securities Act of 1933 was also made to prevent the stock market from having a major crash again.
  • Bank Holiday

    Bank Holiday
    FDR announces that all banks will be shut down for four days until Congress could act. When reopened, depositors stood in line to return their cash to the banks. This helped the stock market greatly and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 8.26 points to close at 62.10; a gain of 15.34%.
  • Second New Deal

    Second New Deal
    From 1935-1936. This was focused more on getting Americans back to work. Organizations were made such as the CCC, the WPA, the CWA, the FDIC, & the FERA. The organizations that gave jobs to Americans were usually very physically laboring and mostly young men worked. Created minimum and maximum wage. Also created social security.
  • Hoover Dam finished

    Hoover Dam finished
    Becoming one of the largest manmade structures in the world, the Hoover Dam was complete. It now impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the world by volume (when full). FDR had a dedication ceremony on September 30, 1935, for the dam.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt re-elected

    Franklin D. Roosevelt re-elected
    Crushed the polls once again winning almost every state, he was now serving his second term. His rival for the election was Alf Landon of Kansas. Roosevelt was still working to push the provisions of his New Deal economic policy through Congress and the courts at the time.
