Darryl McCray is given the nickname Cornbread in juvy, and he proceeds to write his new name all over the walls and tables in the facility. He continued this trend when he was released, spray painting his name all over Philadelphia and effectively igniting the modern graffiti movement. -

TAKI 183
TAKI 183 begins spray painting his tag all over NYC. Taki is regarded as one of the first to wholly dedicate themselves to tagging, greatly fuelling the growing graffiti movement. -
Exposure
TAKI 183 tags covering NYC caught the attention of a New York Times reporter, who profiled him and made him a figurehead in the New York graffiti scene. After the introduction of a famous graffiti artist to the mainstream media, tons of teenagers in New York got their own dreams of becoming a tagger and graffiti practice exploded. -
United Graffiti Artists
Hugo Martinez forms the United Graffiti Artists and begins to display graffiti art in galleries. The introduction of graffiti to galleries was controversial as it was seen as vandalism and barely an art form. This introduction paved the way for the introduction of graffiti into high-class auctions and rich homes. -
Crackdowns
New York government begins crackdown on graffiti, and the artists organized and resisted, beginning the practice of charging their art with messages of resistance. The crackdowns in New York have yet to seize as of 2019. -
"The Kiss"
The Kiss mural depicting a kiss between Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German leader Erich Honecker. This was in honour of the 30th anniversary of the division of Germany, and a criticism of the relationship between East Germany and the USSR during this time. -
Statue of Liberty
42 Statues of Liberty are spray painted on the Berlin Wall during the 100th anniversary of the statue. They were painted at Checkpoint Charlie, one of the most dangerous and guarded areas, as a message of resistance to the division of Germany. -
"The Wall Jumper"
The Walljumper is painted on the Berlin Wall. The painting depicts a prosperous West German jumping over into East Germany as a display of freedom that the East Germans lack. -
Banksy
Banksy paints an image on the West Bank wall in the Gaza strip that criticizes Israeli occupation of Palestine. -
Egypt
Political graffiti erupts in Egypt criticizing the current regime. This is seen as a key contributor to revolutionary ideals in Egypt that led to the modern revolution. -
Extinction Rebellion
A mural appears in London that’s suspected to be Banksy’s work. The image of a little girl holding the sign of the climate change protest group “Extinction Rebellion”. It’s accompanied by the quote “From this moment despair ends and tactics begin”. The mural follows days of protest by the group, who are lobbying for greater efforts to combat climate change.
