Magna Carta
The Magna Carta included guarantees of such fundamental rights as trial by jury and due process of law (protection against the arbitrary, taking of life, liberty, or property). -
English Bill of Rights
Includes guarantees such as the right to a fair trial, as well as freedom from excessive bail and from cruel and unusual punishment. -
Boston Massacre
Mob violence erupted at several ports and many colonists supported a boycott of English goods. On March 5, 1770, British troops in Boston fired on a crowd, killing five people. Which is why it became known as the Boston Massacre. -
Boston Tea Party
A group of men, disguised as Native Americans, got on three tea ships in Boston Harbor. They broke open the chests and dumped the ships cargo into the sea to protest British control of the tea trade. -
Declaration of Independence
Made up of four parts: the Preamble, a Declaration of Natural Rights, a List of Grievances, and a Resolution of Independence. -
Shay's Rebellion
States bickered and grew jealous ans suspicious of one another. They started to refuse to support New Central Government. States taxed one anothers goods and even banned some trade. Economic chaos spread through the colonies. These events became known as "Shay's Rebellion." -
Virginia Plan
Called for a new government with three seperate branches: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. -
New Jersey Plan
Retained the unicameral Congress of the Confederation, with each of the states equally represented.
