ISP Visit
Officer Kurut visited Morgan Park Academy and taught us about law enforcement and the Illinois State Police (ISP). He has been with the state police for 4 years, and has done hundreds of arrests. He works in the 15th District and patrols the highways. This was the first visit for the trip at 9:00 am. To become a ISP, you must go through a proccess that includes: Application, Pfit, Written Test, PHQ, Backround Check, Medical, Oral Exam, Orientation, Academy Training, FTO, then Probation. -
Mary Flowers Visit
Mary Flowers is a Representative of Illinois that visited Morgan Park Academy. She worked with Harold Washington, who then told her that she should go for Rep. She then won a spot in the House and her carreer started from there in 1984. She has proposed a bill to let Illinois have a State Bank rather than a Federal Bank. She said that she has two goals: To get the State Bank law passed, to do a something about the pention situation. She recieved the Legislator of the Year Award. -
Bill Cunningham Visit
Bill Cunningham is a Senator from the Illiois State. He went to Saint Barnaabas then went to Mount Camel for highschool. He went from the House to the Senate, and he represents District 13 of Illinois. He is democratic and later this week he gives us a tour of the Illinois Capital building. -
Chicago History Museum Visit
We visited the Chicago History Museum to learn about Chicago history. Before we went along the museum, we did this activity where we looked at different items from different inspirational time periods. Our box contained items and photos from the camps that held Japanese people during WWII. Each group had to choose an item, so we chose this poster to inform the Japanese people of the move they will make to the camps. After that we looked at many historical items from Chicago. -
Springfield Day #1 Part 1, New Salem Visit
Our first stop was New Salem where there was a visitors center, and behind that, there is a village that Licoln used to live in. In the photo, we are infront of Lincoln's associated home which was a log cabin. There were different people in each of the houses which explained the uses of the cabins. The village held around 100 people in it. -
Springfield Day #1 Part 3, Lincoln's Home/ Tomb Visit
After seeing Lincoln's office, we then visited Lincoln's only official home that he owned. He lived there with his wife and 3 kids, with a room for each of them. It was a 2 story house with a backyard and outhouse. Lincoln's tomb had a large obelisk on top with statues of him and Union soldiers. In front was a copper statue of Lincoln's head with the golden nose. Inside where some statues, then Lincoln's grave inside. Him and his family where buried under the 24 carrot gold cieling. -
Springfield Day #1 Part 2, Old Capital and Law Office Visit
We visited the old state capital next which is actually a remake, for the first one was broken down and remade with many of the same historical items. It contained the House and the Senate and the courtroom where Lincoln would plead his cases in. It also held the clock that stopped the moment that Lincoln died, and it also had an armory where they held old flags and old weapons. We also visited Lincoln's office where he worked with Herdon in his lawyer carreer. -
Springfield Day #2 Part 3, ISP Training Center Visit
We viisited the ISP Training Center where the cadets trained and learned about the ISP. It was a very secure and the place was very exact when it comes to the cadets, -
Springfield Day #2 Part 1, State Capital Visit
We went to the state capital the next day, which we learn was the tallest capital in the U.S. We went into the House and the Senate which where large rooms with alot of seats inside where they discuss bills and laws. We learned alot about bills and how they are formed and debated. After that, we met governor Pat Quinn in his office, where we all got a picture with him together. The capital had 4 large stories, each getting closer to the dome. -
Springfield Day #2 Part 2 Lincoln Library and Musuem Visit
Right after leaving the capital we went to the Lincoln Library and Museum. In the main lobby there were maniquins of Lincoln and his family where we took a picture. then we went into the museum part to see many items from the civil war. Many guns, bullets, medicines, and cannon balls were on display. Then we saw 2 movies about Licoln in the civil war and how he was hated by many and was put into political cartoons. On display was also Lincoln's original hat, 1 of 3 that he used during his life. -
Springfield Day #3 Part 1, War Museum Visit
We visited the War Museum which was run by a former MPA student who served in the Vietnam War.
