    In the late nineteenth century tens of thousands of Jews started to migrate to Palestine. They wanted to restore the land of Israel as a national home for the Jewish people.
  • The McMahon ‐ Hussein Correspondence

    The McMahon ‐ Hussein Correspondence was letters sent by the British. Saying that they would give them land that was previously taken by the Turks because of their support in fighting the Ottoman empire, and that it would be returned to the Arab nation who previously lived in that land.

    Jewish homeland promised - Balfour Declaration
    During WW1, the British captured Palestine from the Ottomans (Turkey). The Balfour Agreement which Britain committed was to support the Jewish people and create a state for them to live in the middle east. In 1922 the League of Nations set out obligations of a British mandate in Palestine, which included the "establishment of the Jewish national home".

    Palestine split

    Palestine is divided into Jewish and Arab states under the United Nations. In the split West Bank including east Jerusalem goes to Jordan and the Gaza Strip to Egypt.
  • The establishment of the state of Israel

    The establishment of the state of Israel
    Jewish People's Council gathered at Tel Aviv Museum, and approved a proclamation stating the the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel. In June the Arab states of Egypt, Jordan, Iraq and Syria tried to invade the newly established state and lost. Israel won a huge amount of land which they claimed as there new national borders.

    Military occupation in West Bank and Gaza strip

    After the Six day war, Israeli military troops were still staying in West Bank and Gaza strip, because of this Palestinians are being held under occupation in West Bank and the Gaza strip and live in fear from the Israeli military troops watching over them every day.

    The Israeli settlements

    Since the occupation from the Six day war. Israel have been placing settlements for their civilians to live. The settlements that have been placed in West Bank are said to be illegal by the international community.

    First Intifada

    The First Intifada started with riots and violence. Israel forces responded with live ammunition. The Israeli army killed around 1,000 Palestinians in the first intifada whilst 164 Israelis were killed.

    Peace process

    Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin signed the Declaration of Principles on Interim Self-Government in Oslo in 1993. in 1995 after this agreement Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist.

    Second Intifada

    A campaign of suicide bombings and terrorist attacks began on September 29 2000 and in five years left over 1,068 Israelis dead and over 7,000 injured most of them were civilians. 3,000 Palestinians were also killed in this battle

    Separation barrier

    from 2002 Israel have been building a wall that is meant to be 700km long which goes around all of the West bank. Israel is claiming that the wall is for there for safety reasons. Although some of the land from West Bank has been taking up from them and has been giving to Israel. This wall restricts travel from Palestine to Israel and not allowing Palestinian people to go to work due some of the land in which Israel has taken when building this wall.

    Palestinian factions

    Islamist movement Hamas takes control over the Gaza Strip. After fighting with his rival Fatah lead by Abbas. on October 2017 Hamas and Abbas sign a reconciliation to stop the fighting.
  • American embassy moving to Jerusalem

    Successive US Presidents have supported the recognition of Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel. It was announced in late 2017 that the US would formally recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move their embassy from Tel Aviv. The new embassy is due to open in 2019. There is concern that this move could undermine the ongoing peace process. The funding to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem was approved by congress back in 1995.
