Gizella Abramson

  • Born in eastern Poland near Tarnopol, growing up on her father's farm

  • In September of 1939 Russians occupy eastern Poland and Gizella's house is taken over by the Russians. Nazis invade and occupy western Poland

  • From September of 1939 to the summer of 1941, Gizella lives in a tent on her farm (cow pasture) and learns Russian; Russians take all family possessions

  • Axis is formed

  • Gizella's family captured and sent to ghetto

  • Germans attack eastern Poland in summer of 1941 after losing “Battle of Britain”

  • United States enters World War II

  • D-Day, The Allies invade continental Europe

  • Deathmarches Begin, Gizella was forced to march with others to central Germany

  • Hitler commits suicide

  • Liberated

  • Joined aunt in Brooklyn, N.Y.

  • graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y., with a B.A. in Education

  • Married her husband Paul Abramson

  • Relocated to Raleigh

  • Started working as the Director of Education at Temple Beth Or, continued for 19 years

  • Became a highly sought-after speaker on the Holocaust
