Privacy and the internet

Cable Competition
The Cable Communications Act of 1984 was put in place in order to bring competition into the cable industry. This was needed because cable operators were basically a monopoly and could charge consumers a large price. I give this law a D due to the fact that it did nothing it was supposed to do and because it wasn't until the Cable Television Protection and Competition Act of 1992 that prices for cable did actually decrease. -
Privacy Protection
This law was made in order to increase protections from the government when it comes to privacy rights on electronics. Government agencies must obtain warrents in order to look through private information a person might have. I give this law a D since it couldn't keep up with technology changing so rapidly. It doesn't protect a lot of privacy rights online, which is what matters a lot now and days. -
Protecting Children
This law was made in order to protect personal information that kids might give out online. It requires website operators to detail in privacy policies that deal with the safety of children, but since it is a hassle to do many website operators usually just don't let kids under the age of 13 access all content on the website. I give this law a B since it seems to actually make companies think twice and since it''s a law I've actually noticed my whole life. -
Enhanced 911
Made in order to enhance which phones could reach 911. Now non-land line phones could call 911 in order to increase public safety. I give this law an A since it's seemed to be working well and since it gave a huge opportunity to save lives, which is always positive. -
Social Media Protections
Made in order to stop employers from asking for personal information regarding an employee's social media. Employers can not threaten to fire or fire an employee for refusing to give up that information as well. I give this law a C since it does help protect people's privacy when it comes to companies being able to actually log on to your account, but companies can still just look up information on social media about a person. This defeats the purpose since social media is so open. -
Library Information Protection
This is a California law made in order to protect private information that may be given to a library. Such as books that have been checked out or papers that have been read. I give this law an A because it simply does what it needs to do and I can't see much negative coming out of it. It's great that private information that people may be into can be studied privately. -
Future Bill of Rights
This is a law made in order to finally begin to give more privacy protection for those using the internet. This is in order to begin more of a business and consumer trust, which can continue the economic growth that the internet can bring in. I give this law a B since I know it will probably need reform, but I find it great because it's a huge step forward in privacy rights for the internet.
