Potsdam Conference
This was a conference held in Potsdam, Germany, and was attended by Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Harry Truman. They met to discuss terms for the end of the Second World War. -
Anglo-American Zone/ Bizone
The Anglo-American zone is the zone that was created after America and Britain combined their zones during the occupation of Germany in the time following the Second World War. It is also known as the Bizone. -
Berlin Blockade
The Soviet Union attempted to prevent the United States, Great Britain, and France from traveling easily to their sectors in Berlin. The Western Powers began to airlift supplies to West Berlin, and this lasted for about a year. -
Konrad Adenauer
Konrad Adenauer was the Chancellor of West Germany after the Second World War. He was born on the 5th of January, 1876, and he died on the 19th of April, 1969. -
GDR formed
GDR stands for the "German Democratic Republic" and is also known as East Germany. West Berlin was outside of the GDR's control. The GDR governed the eastern section of Germany until 1990. -
"Basic Law" for the Federal Republic of Germany
The "Basic Law" or Grundgesetz is the Constitution of Germany. It was officially approved on May 8th, 1949, and was implemented on May 23 of the same year. -
Social Unity Party
The Social Unity Party was the governing party of East Germany until the revolution in 1989. This party was supported by Stalin, and was considered communist with Leninist and Marxist ideologies. -
Pleven Plan
This was created to create a Supernational European Army that would eventually become a part of a European Defence community. It was created by Rene Pleven. -
Hallstein Doctrine
This was one of the most important doctrines in West Germany's foreign policy. It was created by Walter Hallstein, and it said that the FRG would not establish or maintain diplomatic relations with any state that recognized the GDR (East Germany). -
Warsaw Treaty
This was a Treaty signed by eight Communist powers. The founding member was the Soviet Union. -
FRG joins NATO
West Germany joined NATO on may 9th, 1955. This was only four days after the American, French, and British forces formally ended their military occupation of the then independet country. -
Treaty of Rome
The Treaty of Rome was an Internatinal agreement that led to the creation of the EEC ( European Economic Community). The Treaty was officially signed on March 25, 1957 by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany. -
Berlin Wall Built
The Berlin Wall was built on August 13 1961. It was intended to separtate West Berlin and East Berlin. 130 people died attempting to cross from West Berlin to East Berlin. -
The Second Berlin Crisis
This was the last major Military/political European incident of the Cold War about the occupational status of Berlin. It started after the U.S.S.R. provoked Western Powers with an ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of Western armed forces from West Berlin. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin wall was taken down in 1989, and was torn down by both sides. President Reagan is famous for saying "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall." -
Two Plus Four Treaty
The Big Four gave up their power and let Germany for the first time become a soverign state. This treaty was negotiated by the Big four and East and West Germany.
