German Unification

  • Creation of German Confederation

    Under the rule of Austria. Prussia and Austria were two countries ruling German states. Was a movement for unification but neither Prussia and Austria were prepared to let it happen.

    Bismarck governed as dictatot

    Otto van Bismarck who led the German Unification. Was prime minister for 11 years and used a dictatorship manner.
  • Bismarck Appointed Prime Minister

    His main idea was to have Prussia take all power in German states and to kick Austria out entirely.

    Danish War

    The Danish War fought between the Germans of Prussia and Denmark over the 2 provinces Schleswig and Holstein. Prussia easily defeated them with the hellp from Austria and they became joint owners.

    Austro-Prussian War

    Bismarck started this war to take Austria out of Germany. Prussia joined with Italy during this war and they quickly defeated Austria. They signed a treaty and Austria resulted in loss of land.
  • Relations with Austria and Prusia Break over Schleswig- Holstein

    Prussia went into Holstein and started the Seven Weeks War. Austria was defeated in Battle of Sadowa, and the Treaty of Prague was appointed and Austria lost affairs with Germany.
  • Establishment of North German Confederation

    After the Austro-Prussian War, Bismarck took over several northern German states and covinced other ones to join a Prussian North German Confederation. Only 4 south states remained out of the confederation

    Franco-Prussian War

    Bismarck wanted war with Franch so the southern Germans would voluntarily joined Prussian-control Germany. France declared war back and the southern states joined with Prussia. Prussia invaded France and quickly overan the country
  • Establsihment of German Empire

    During Franco-Prussian War, the 4 southern german states joined the unification with Prussia. In 1871, Bismarck proclaimed WIlliam I as king (kaiser). The German Empire was proclaimed at the Versailles.
