Prussia is defeated by France in 1806 and put in the Confederation of the Rhines. when Prussia built its army up again, it defeated FranceGermans began to realize that their neighbors weren't that different from them, and they start to appreciate Germany as a whole.Nationalism was positive because it allowed Germany to defeat France. -
Zollverien

The Zollvereien was a union between many German states that allowed them to trade easily with one another. This significantly improved trade and helped to spread not only industrialization but also nationalism. At this point, nationalism was very positive because it helped to improve almost every country's economy. -
Revolution of 1848
Following the example of the French, working class Germans began to have hunger riots and uprisings. Most fights were mild, but a few were bloody, like the one in Berlin. -

The National Assembly of 1848 appointed the ruler of Prussia to rule over all of the new unified Germany. Bismarck was in favor of the constitution that granted this because it gave a lot of power to Prussia. It was a negative effect of Nationalism because the new constitution gave all the power to the Kaiser, who was from Prussia. -

Bismarck's dream was to make Prussia the ruler of all of Germany. He believed that it was Prussia's destiny. He would also do anything to help Prussia achieve its destiny, and he said so in his speech "iron and blood". -
Danish War
The Danish War was another manuver by Bismarck to take over all of Germany. He didn't like Austria, but he needed their help. they defeated Denmark and Prussia got Holstein, which had a German poplulation. This added to the feeling of nationalism throughout Germany, which was a good thing because that feeling will help them defeat France. -

This provoked Napoleon to declare war, which caused the southern German states to look to Prussia for help. All of this was Bismarck's plan. In this case, nationalism was bad because it caused the southern states to be tricked into running to Prussia. -

This picture depicts the scene where Napoleon III surrenders to Bismarck after the Franco- Prussian war. Prussia proceeds to punish France not only for the war, but for all of the things that France did against Prussia. Whole war lasted 2 months. -

The new constitution gave all of the power to Prussia, which is not a very good result of nationalism because now Prussia can control everything.
