German-Italian Unification

  • Revolution of 1848

    Mazzini's followers seized that Papal States and they were then claimed as the Roman Republic.The French troops then crushed the rebellion and Mazzini left and continued send his propaganda abroad. He was called the soul of unification.
  • Lombardy

    Cavour and Napoleon III made an alliance to help Sardinia if Austria ever attempted to attack. Austria started a war and France and Sardinia won. Sardinia's success started more rebellions elsewhere in Italy.
  • Giuseppe Garibaldi Captures Sicily

    Giuseppe Garibaldi led a small army of South Italian rebels, called "red shirts" for the attire they always wore, to capture the island kingdom of Sicily.

    Giuseppe Garibaldi meets with Victor Emmanul in the city of Teano and decides to let him rule over the Southern Italian kingdoms he had conquered with his army of red shirts.

    Bismarck ignored the lawmakers and ruled as a dictator in Prussia
  • Creation of Prussian Military Power

    Otto von Bismarck request for military funds was rejected by Prussian Parliment. He saw this as an act of defiance to his power. He went against the Parliment.
  • Start of the Danish War

    Bismarck provoked a war with Denmark over the provinces of Schleiswig and Holstein. Prussia and Austria jointly defeated Denmark and they co-owned the two provinces.

    7 Weeks War

    Bismarck started a war with Austria to gain land in Germany. Most of the German states supported Austria, and Prussia was supported by Italy. General Von Moltke's armies overwhelmed Austria in 7 weeks. When the treaty was signed, Austria gave Schleiswig and Holstein to Prussia, gave Venetia to Italy, and dissolved Austrian-dominated German Confederation.

    Bismarck annexed several North German states and convinced the remaining states to join. 4 South German States remained.

    Franco-Prussian War

    To convince the remaining South German states to jion the North German Confederation. Bismarck provoked Napoleon and France declared war. General Von Molke's invaded France and surrounded the main armies in the Battle of Sedan. Prussia took control of Paris.
