Birthday
Hi my name is Dieter and i was born in Berlin Germany on July 18, 1875. I livewith my parents on a farm. It was great living on the farm but we didnt have enough money so we are moving to america. Plus america has more jobs and we can get paid more if we get a job. -
Getting Examined by Docters.
When e got off of the ship that brought us to angel island we first had to be examined by docters.It was painful though because they had to flip our eyelids inside out tocheck for a disease. If we had a disease we had to go to the detainee station and we were held there until a docter could come check us out. -
Changing Names
After the docter came and looked at our eyes we changed our names because some people didnt like germans. But it was not going to help anyways because of our accent. People could still tell who we were if we changed our names. But still we did it because we wanted to try to be free in America and not be beat or hurt by other americans. -
Finding a House
Once we got out of the immigration station the first thing we did was find a house because we needed shelter. We couldn't find a house so we had to go to a tenement where most immigrants were going. a tenement is a neighborhood with many slums in it. a slum is a house or appartment building with to many people in it. It was very harch and sickenin. Many people got sick and maybe even died because of disease and uncleansliness. -
Finding a Job
After we where in the tenement for a while we had to find jobs because we had to have eough money to get food. In the days we had no food we had to steel take food from other people. My dad got a job at a bank. He got very lucky that he studied with banking in germany because now he gets alot of money for that job. My mom got a job a ta a clothing factory where she makes new clothing for other women. -
Riding a street Car.
The next year in america i got to ride a street car with my dad when we went to the markets to buy food and clothing. It was even on my birthday! It was very fun because you didnt have to walk every where and you got to relax while you rode them. The street car was invented in 1871 by a man named Andrew smith hallidie. It was a great invention because it made transportation easier. -
Buying a better house
About 2 months after I rode on a streetcar my family bought a new house. It was very nice it had 2 bedrooms and a kithcen and a bathroom. It was blue with black window shades and it was on a hill in the woods. It did not cost that much because the inside was very rundown so our dad had to repair it before we could live in it. But finally the day came that w could and it was the best day ever.
