generations of computers

  • First Generation

    First Generation
it appeared the first electronic machines called computers and based on vacuum tubes and electromagnetic relays to process information and data punch cards to insert data. They were expensive and took up too much space, but they operated more quickly than men. Because of theirs high costs, only they were used in business environments.
Between 1947 and 1959, it appeared the first computers based on electrical circuits with transistors, triodes and resistors.
  • Second Generation

    Second Generation
The computers of the second generation remained expensive, which made to continue being used mostly in companies
  • Third Generation

    Third Generation
it appeared the chip, that is, thousands of transistors connected all together and inserted in a very small conductive metal sheet. These integrated circuits significantly reduced the size of computers and notably increased their calculation speed by allowing multitasking. appeared the magnetic disks, which are faster and with greater capacity than magnetic tapes.
  • Fourth Generation

    Fourth Generation
with the massive and cheap productivity of these integrated circuits called microprocessors, when the first pocket calculator appeared. In 1981, with the advent of new operating systems (initially the MS-DOS and then Windows) and the first personal computer (IBM home), Computer Science acquired a true social dimension.
  • Five Generation

    Five Generation
From 90 until today, the multimedia personal computers (with text, sound, images, video, communications...) are considered the fifth generation. These are in all activities of the individual in today's society, such as cultural, artistic, home, leisure, school, etc., being the culture of our time. Currently there are computer applications for all social areas.
