    In 1976 people they started to want to change their gender. A big court case in New Jersey held that trans people who had undergone sex reassignment surgery could marry as the legal sex matching their gender identity, the first ruling of its kind.

    Then in the late 1970s, people started to get surgery that was a complete sex reassignment surgery, which is now called a gender affirmation surgery. Today, many people who identify as transgender have never had any surgeries and there are some who do not take hormones.

    It started to become popular to change your gender in the 1990s. People started to look into changing their gender a lot more during this time as it became more and more popular. And the burgeoning trans pride movement became a lot more popular.

    In the 2010s it was made where you could not discriminate or make fun of people for being transgender. In the Equality Act, gender reassignment means proposing to undergo, undergoing, or having undergone a process to reassign your sex. this all happened in the 2010s.

    In 2023 it is viewed as very normal to change your gender. Since so many people are doing it, it has become very normalized. Today there is said to be 107 different genders, which is very different from the 1960s
