Gay rights movement starts
This is a cause and effect because sense people were not being accepted for who they were, gays began the gay rights movement to get people to understand what they are going through and to get them to accept them as they are. On this day the Stone Wall riots began when police raided an illegal gay bar. This became known as the beginning of the gay rights movements. -
Homosexuality no longer classified as a mental illness
This is a huge change because now when someone says they are a homosexual, they will no longer be thought of having a menal illness. It was this year when the American Psychological Association's Board voted to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental disorders. Dr, Robert Spitzer proved that there was no link between homosexuality and mental illness, influenzing the board to take it out of the manual. -
Wisconsin prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation
Wisconsin becomes the first state in the union to issue a ban on discrimination based off of sexual orientation -
Vermont becomes first state to allow same sex civil unions
This is a turning point because gays are now allowed to be in civil unions which means people are starting to believe that they deserve to have the same ritghts as others. In the court case of Baker v. Vermont on December 20, 1999, the Vermont supreme court heard the appeal that the Vermont constitution entitled the same rights be given to same sex couples as they were to opposite sex couples. -
Vermont becomes first state to allow civil unions (continued)
The Vermont supreme court did not rule saying that state officials have to allow the civil unions, but gave the decision to the state legislatures. It was on this day when the house of representatives voted 76 to 69 in favor of the legislation creating the same legal rights and obligations to same sex couples. -
Same sex marriage becomes legal in connecticut
Thois is a turning point for gay rights and same sex marriage because now the government is starting to realize that everyone deserves the same rights no matter who they like. In 2008 the U.S. supreme overturned a lower court ruling that gays and lesbians have the same rights as others to marry. -
