In South Africa, the law stated that all indians had to be finger printed and they could enter their houses. That caused Gandhi to talk to all indians and explain civil disobedience. Indian Troops Return Home
Gandhi and the Indian troops returned home from his travels and from war thinking the British were going to treat them fairly and fo the reforms that they promised. However, unfortunately,they still treated them like second class people and ignored. -
Rowatt Acts
Since Indians began to hate the British, it caused the British to pass the Rowlatt Acts. The Rowlatt Acts allowed Brititsh government to send protesters to jail without a trial for as least 2 years. -
Amritsar Massacre
Muslims ad Hindus went to Amritsar to pray and listen to political speeches (Gandhi's speeches) as a way to silently protest aganist the British and the Rowatt Acts. Indians were unaware that the British had recently banned publc meetings. British troops were ordered to shoot and fire at the Indians. 400 Indiands died and 1,200 were wounded. -
Civil Disobedience
After the massacre, Gandhi became known as the leader of the independence movement. The Congress Party endorsed "Civil Desobedience" (the deliberate and public refusal to obey an unjust law, and nonviolence as the means to achieve independence). -
Boycotts
Gandhi told all th Indians to stop buying British goods, and to weavetheir own cloths instead of wearing and buying their clothsHe told them to sto attending government schools, paying for their taxes and voting in the elections. The sales of British goods and cloths in India dropped extremely. -

Indian's Declaration of Independence
Gandhi publishes the Declaration of Independence of India. -
Salt March
Gandhi and his Indian followers, marched along the seacost where they collected seawater and let it evaporate to create their own salt. This demostrated the protest against the Salt Act (act that only allowed the Indians to buy British salt and pay tax on it). The Salt March caused Gandhi and 60,000 other people to get arrested. -

Avoiding politics, Gandhi goes visit and travels across all of India and the rural areas. -
Government of India Act
The British Parliament passed the Government of India Act. It provided local self-government and limited democtratic elections, but not total independence. This caused tension between the Muslim and Hindus because of their different perspectives on India's future as an independent nation. -

Gandi begins the hunger strike. He stops eating as a way of silent protesting so he can cause guilt in others. World War II begins -
