Act of Protest - Train Ride
Gandhi was riding on a train in India in first class. The British conductor came up to him and told him that Indians weren't allowed to be up there and he threatened to remove him by force. Gandhi didn't retalliate harshly, instead he stated that he had a first class ticket and he was a lawyer. The man told him to move or he would kick him off and Gandhi firmly said no followed by him getting kicked off. Non-violent protest because Gandhi firmly said he wouldn't do what was wanted. -
Act of Imperialism - discrimination on train
Gandhi was on a train in first class, the British conductor was racist and called Gandhi names before he yelled at him to get off. He kicked him off regardless of the ticket just because he Indian. This is an act of imperialism because they took control of Gandhi and treated him unequally because of his origin. -
Act of Protest- burning of id cards
Gandhi throws away and burns his identification card and asks that all the other Indians do the same, the Brits arrest anyone that tries to do so and beat gandhi with a stick. gathered outside the Hamidia Mosque. this act began Gandhi's pasive resistance campain. This was an act of protest because Gandhi and is followers disobeyed the instructions of the Brittish athorities. The officers proceded to beat Ghandi and his followers down. -
Act of Protest - Gandhi doesn't step off sidewalk
Gandhi is walking down the sidewalk when he is approached by some white young men who call him racist name and yell him to get off of the sidewalk. Gandhi tells them he won't calmly and they don't know what to do. Gandhi walks past. This is an act of protest because Gandhi doesn't fight back physically, he is nice and tells them no instead of stepping off of the sidewalk. -
Act of Prostest- mine workers
Gandhi leads a group of workers out of a mine (where there had been fed and treated poorly) to peacefully protest the inequality. In 1913, a tax had been to charge all former indentured labourers, known as the Indian Relief Bill. In protest of this, gandhi led a march on 6 November 1913, which included 127 women, 57 children and 2037 men, all mine workers. Gandhi was arrested. He was released on bail, rejoined the march. -
Act of Imperialism- Amristar Massacre
The British massacred 400 unarmed Indians who werepeacefully listening to politicalspeeches. This incident further swayed Indian sentiment against the British because of their cruelty and unjust behavior. this is imperialism because they were peacfully protsting and the british just massacred them for no reason. -
Act of Imperialism - Imprisonment of Gandhi
The British realized that Gandhi was the head of the Indian threat so they arrested him for speaking out against new lasw being made. This arrest caused riots to break out. This is an act of Imperialism because the British purposely imprisoned Gandhi so it would cause a riot, thus giving them probable cause to kill and imprison the Indians. -
Act of Imperialism - British officers kill rioters
The riot began, but instead of stopping the riot and keeping casualties to a minimum, the British killed the citzens. They could have detained anyone extremely dangerous but they killed Indian people instead. This is an act of imperialism because they weren't civil with the Indians. They could've calmed the riot but killed mass amounts of people instead. -
Act of imperialism- fingerprints
The british make laws that say every indian must give their fingerprints, the must show their identification cards to british police when they come to their homes. The British may also enter their homes at anytime and ask for this from the women as well. -
act of protest- salt march
He walks 240 miles to the sea and makes some salt (which was illegal and controlled by the British monopoly on salt) he does this to provoke a response which will prove his point that the British are cruel. Gandhi was making a scean to the rest of the world that it should not be illigal to get salt, and use it for yourself, even when the british have claimed the rights to it. -
Act of Imperialism - beating of Indians with salt
Gandhi led the salt march and they made salt, which they then sold in the market. Britain didn't allow salt to be made by anyone but the country to create a monopoly and bring in the money, so they beat anyone with salt that wasn't British made. This is imperialistic because Britiain controlled the salt market and then abused anyone who attempted to protest by making their own, instead of simply arresting everyone breaking the law. -
Act of Protest- burning of the clothes
Gandhi made all the clothes that were not localy made to be burned. He wanted the Indians to boycott the British clothing so that they cannot profit from the Indian money. Gandhi wanted all the people to make there own clothes. This is an act of protest because the British wanted the Indians to pay them for the resource that the Indians didn't need. That is why Gandhi wanted them to boycott. -
act of imperialism- horses
The British try to run over the indians with horses because they protested the inequality. Gandhi is then imprisoned for his actions. He is ordered to 6 years in jail, but he gets out after only four because of his refusal to retaliate to the harsh brittish punnishments. -
Act of Imperialism- Gandhi dies
This event sent shockwaves around the world. Only 6 years after India gained freedom. Just after Gandhi had finished fasting for the violence between Muslems and Hindus, he was shot. An interesting thing was that the man who shot him was actually for a peacfull India, he believed that Gandhi gave up the fight. i guess you could say that it wasn't an act of imperialism, but it was a very important event in the progression of a peacfull India
