  • National Child Labor Committee Founded

    Edgar Gardner Murphy proposed the creation of this committee at a conference, and afterward, it was created with Felix Adler as its first Chairman. This committee did a great deal of work to expose unjust child labor as well as to fight against such labor.
  • Election of 1904 - Theodore Roosevelt Wins

    The Republican party nominee Theodore Roosevelt won the election of 1904 and the presidency against Democratic Party nominee Alton B. Parker.
  • Election of 1908 - William Howard Taft Wins

    Although the Republican Party nominee William Howard Taft won the presidency as opposed to William Jennings Bryan who ran for the Democratic Party, there was a third-party candidate who managed to amass some 421,000 votes, Eugene V. Debs, who ran for the Socialist Party.
  • Election of 1912 - Woodrow Wilson Wins

    Woodrow Wilson managed to defeat both the incumbent president William Howard Taft as well as the previously elected president Theodore Roosevelt who was running as a candidate for the Bull Moose Party. Eugene V. Debs was also running for the Socialist Party during this election as well.

    The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 established the Federal Reserve System as the central bank of the United States to provide the nation with a safer, more flexible, and more stable monetary and financial system. The law sets out the purposes, structure, and functions of the System as well as outlines aspects of its operations and accountability.
  • 16th and 17th Constitutional Amendments

    In 1913, two amendments to the constitution were passed, the 16th in February, establishing a federal income tax, and the 17th in May, providing for the direct election of U.S. senators.

  • Germany Declares War on Russia

    In response to Austrian warships bombarding Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, Russia begins full mobilization of its troops. Germany demanded that Russia stop this, and not get involved, but eventually declared war on Russia, as France and Belgium began to mobilize their forces as well.
  • Germany Declares War on France

    Germany declares war on France and invades neutral Belgium. Britain then sends an ultimatum–which was rejected by the Germans–to withdraw from Belgium.

    After holding a special session of Congress on April 2, 1917, Congress officially declared war on Germany under the request of President Woodrow Wilson, which took place officially on April 6, 1917.

    This act is one that sought to “Prohibit speech, writing and behavior that might ‘incite, provoke or encourage’ resistance to US or promote cause of its enemies."
  • 18th and 19th Constitutional Amendments

    In 1920, two amendments to the constitution were passed, the 18th in January, making the production, transport, and sale of alcohol illegal (which was commonly known as prohibition), and the 19th which prohibited any U.S. citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of their sex.
