Gothic Style
The furniture of this period was massive and very severe. Each piece of furniture emphasized vertical rather than horizontal structure and the use of curved lines was very limited. -
Baroque Style
Baroque Style furniture has a very elegant and polished look. This period began the fad of tufted chairs and couches, which means that buttons were sewn into the fabric in order to create a pressed look. -

The furniture was mainly rock work derived from natural stones. The furniture was typically outlines with an irregular shape and structure. It was very fashionable in France at this time. -
Early Mahogany Period

Neo-Classical Style and Empire Style
This furniture was a combination of Greek and Roman ideas which combined simplicity and severity. The rigid lines created a cold and uninvited atmosphere which was the ultimate goal of this furniture style. Curved lines were also restricted in Empire furniture. -
Late Mahogany period

This style was heavy with wood work and horizontal lines. Some metal did come into the picture during this time period. -
Eclectic Style
Eclectic style is less cut and dry than the other styles. It is a mix of many styles and eras. It implements a simple look and feel while the style encourages individuality. -
Arts and Crafts
This style is very heavy with wood work. -
Art Nouveau
This furniture style brought in designs that inspired abstract floral pieces and gave an area an overall organic, free flowing look and feel.
