Fukushima 7.1 Earthquake
At 8:16, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Hamadōri region of Fukushima, Japan. 222,000 people lost power immediantly and 4 people were killed with 10 others injured. The Fukushima earthquake was actually an aftershock of the 9.0 Tōhoku earthquake. Waves as high as 46ft pounded the power plant, as an evacuation was ordered for anyone living within 1.9 miles out of fear of reactor 1's emergency cooling system failing. -
Explosion
There is a massive explosion in the outer structure of unit 1. The concrete building surrounding the steel reactor vessel collapses as a result of the explosion; however no damage is believed to have been sustained to the reactor itself. Four workers are injured. -
2nd Explosion
A second explosion of reactor 3 occurs while a fire breakts out at reactor 4. No injuries are reported. Beta and Alpha radiation particles are discovered in significant ammounts outside of the power plant. Radiation equivalent dose rates of 400 millisieverts per hour are observed at one location in the vicinity of unit 3. Gamma radiation is also discovered outside of Fukushima. -
Radiation to the extreme
All but a small group of remaining workers at the plant are placed on standby because of the radiation rising to a dangerous level of up to 1 Sv/h. -
More Radiation
For the second consecutive day, high radiation levels are detected in an area 19 miles northwest of the damaged Fukushima I nuclear plant at 150 μSv/h -
