Russian Revolution
There were two revolutions, on in March and the other in November. In the November revolution, the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government. They then set up a communist stateand hoped for peace with the centeral powers. -
Potsdam Conference
The United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union met at the final wartime conference in Potsdam. During the conference the Soviets, British, French and Americans all decided that they would take reparations mainly from their own occupation zones. They also decided on free trade across the world. -
Eisenhower’s Massive Retaliation Policy
Eisenhower's Massive Retaliation Policy is a nuclear strategy in which the state retaliates itself to a much greater force if there is an attack on them. In order for it to work the state being attacked has to make it clear that it can and will attack using much greater forces if it is necessary. The place that is attacking has to also believe that there will be nuclear weapons used against them. -
Atomic bomb - Hiroshima/Nagasaki
The atomic bomb is a nuclear weapon that has been dropped two times both by the United States onto Japan. The bombs were dropped near the end of WWII. The bombings killed about 200,000 people and injured many civilians and military men. After the bombings Japan surrendered. -
Iron Curtain
The iron curtain is a metaphor which is actually a boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas. This happened at the end of WWII and lasted until the end of the cold war in 1992. On the East side of the iron curtain they were infulenced by the Soviet Union but on the west side they were allied to the United states. -
Truman Doctrine
In the Truman Doctrine president Truman declared that there must be a policy that the United States has to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by the armed minorities or by outside pressure. The congress agreed and the United States sent $400 million in aid to Greece and Turkey to reduce the chance of communist taking over. -
Hollywood 10
The Hollywood 10 was started because the House Un-American Activites Committee (HUAC) investigated Communist influence in the movie-making industry. The committee thought that communists were sneaking propaganda into films. The HUAC got 43 witnesses from the Film industry and many of the witnesses were friendly in supporting the belief that there was propaganda. There was 10 unfriendly witness and those ten got sent to prison. -
Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was the United States plan to invade Western Europe. It had been planned out in a total for four years. The goal was to rebuild war-torn regions, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, improve European prosperity and prevent the spread of communism. The Marshall plan had been divided amoung states. -
Berlin Blockade and Airlift
The Berlin Blockage was the first major international crisis. During the Berlin blockade, the Soviet Union blocked all of the Western Allies' railway road and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under the Westerns control. Although the Soviets offered to drop the blockade if the Deutsche mark from West Berlin. The airlift was organized to the people in West Berlin. -
NATO
The NATO is the Nation Atlantic Treaty Organization which is an international alliance that has 29 member states from North American and Europe. They signed a treaty that stated that if any one of the states got attacked that they would take it as they all had been attacked and all the members should fight back against the attacker. -
Soviet bomb test
The Soviets had tested the first bomb successfully whos code name was "First Lightning'. They sent up buildings and bridges and even had animals in cages near by to see what the radiation would. The buildings were destroyed and they animals were killed by it. -
Korean War
The war started when North Korea invaded South Korea. As a result of the Cold war, Korea got split into two. Both North and Sout Korea claimed they were the main government of Korea and neither of them would accept the border as a permanent. The fighting between this then lead to a full blown war. -
Khrushchev Takes over
Nikita Khrushchev led the Soviet Union during part of the cold war as the first secretary of the communist party and he was a chairman in the Council of Ministers. Khrushchev had worked his way up the Soviet hierarchy ladder and was a supporter of Stalin's purges. Stalin even sent him to govern in the Ukraine in which he continued purges there. -
Army-McCarthy hearings
The Army-McCarthy hearings were a bunch of hearings put on by the United States to investigate accusations between the United States and U.S. Senetar Joesph McCarthy. The army had accused Roy Chon of pressuring the army to give a former aid of McCarthy and a friend of Chon special treatment. Although he just said that it was bad judgment. -
Warsaw Pact
The treaty was formally known as the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance. It was signed in Warsaw, Poland by the Soviet Union and seven Soviet states of central and Eastern Europe. It was created in reaction to integration of West Germany into NATO. The Warsaw pact was made to balance powers. -
Hungarian Revolution
Hungarian Revolution was a nationwide revolt against Marxist-Leninist government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies. It had been a major threat to the Soviets. Thousands of people marched through central Budapest. -
U2 Incident
The united states U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Soviets while it was taking photos in the Soviets territory. The Soviets did admit that they wanted to capture the piolt and parts of the U-2. -
Bay of Pigs invasion
Bay of Pigs invasion was a failed mission invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA. A group was funded and trained by the CIA in an attempt to overthrow the community that was crawling with communists. However, the invaders were defated within three days. -
Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a barrier that physically divided Berlin. It was made by the German Democratic Republic. The wall cut off West Berlin from East Germany and Berlin. The wall was opened in November of 1989. -
Detente under Nixon
Detente means relaxation in French. It is the easing of strained relations, especially in a political situation. It fits with the cold war because its the decreasing of tensions between East and West, working on putting an end to communism in Eastern Europe and soon the Soviet Union. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day long confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was concerning the American ballistic missile deployment in Italy and Turkey. The Cuban Missile Crisis is considered the closest the cold war had gotten to a nuclear war. -
The Vietnam War
This war was a conflict that happened in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The Vietnamese army was supported by the Soviets, China, and other communist allies. the United States was supported by South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand, and other non-communist allies. The war went on for about 19 years. -
The Reagan Doctrine
The Reagan Doctrine was a strategy made by the United States the United States under the Reagan Administration to overwhelm the global influence of the Soviet Union and try to end the Cold War. The United States aided anti-communist places in attempt to end the cold war. -
Reagan’s Berlin Wall Speech
In Reagans speach he called out the Soviets leader and told him to "tear down this wall' that had been physically dividing West and East Berlin. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989)
The Berlin wall was knocked down by many people. It became a very major event in history becuase there was no longer something physically dividing Berlin.
