Deficeit Spending
The first and second estates spent so much money and didnt have to pay any taxes that put the third estate into deep debt and led many into starvation. They spent money on wars, luxury and paying back borrowed money. -
Tennis Court Oath
The third estate to make a daring step and represent the people of France, they announced themselves as the National Assembly. The meeting hall they assemble in was locj=ked and guarded so they moved to a nearby tennis court where they made the Tennis Court Oath that they would not stop meeting until they have a constitution. -
Fall of the Bastille
The Bastille is a fortress used as a prison for political and other prisoners. The 800 Parisians demanded gunpowder and weapons the were thought to be stored in the Bastille. After the Parisians broke down the Bastille, killing and releasing prisoners, they found no weapons. In the eyes of the Parisians, the Bastille was a symbol of opression from the monarchy and now the day is celebrated as the national independence day since 1880. -
Special privileges end
The National Assembly rules out the Monarchy and abolishes special privileges. There is no more King or estates. Everyone must pay taxes and have no special status. The Nobles believed that they had not given up anything that they didnt give up already. This made the people very happy because the French Revolution was changing and making things into a democracy instead of a monarchy. -
Decalaration of Rights to Men
In this document, it declares that all men are equal, excluding women. People at natural rights that came befor the law. The document was wriiten off of the Declaration of Indepence in America that was written 13 years before. The Declaration of the Rights of Men proclaimed, freesom of religion, all mens natural rights came before the law, Women were not included in this Declaration. -
Women March on Versailles
About six thousand enraged women marched to Versailles looking for Queen Marie Antoinette because of the shortange of bread. These women were angry because the Queen and King lavished while they could barely afford bread. -
King Louis XVI hires Jacques Necker
King Louis XVI hired Jacques Necker to help elieviate some of the debt that France was in. Necker suggested that instead of the third estate paying all of the taxes, the first and second estates shoul dhave to pay taxes too. The King doesnt like this idea and fires Necker. -
King Louis XVI Escape Fails
Things were starting to get out of hand so the Queen and King were going to escape to Austria. Since Queen Marie Antoinette's brother was King of Austria, they had hoped that he would help regain power of their country. -
Threats come from abroad
Thie King of Prussia and the Emperor of Austria threatened to intervene to protect the French monarchy if this continued to happen in the Declaration of Pilnitz. Howver it was mostly a bluff, the people took it literally and planned to fight. -
Radicals delare war
The war causd more food shortages and a rise in prices. The Sans-culottes group demanded a republic or a government ruled by elected representatives instead of one certain family who rules. The new Legislative Assembly took office. -
Maximilien Robespierre
Maximilien Robespierre or "the incorruptible" believed that France could only get what they wanted throught terror. He was the sole leader of the revolution until July 28, 1794 when we shot himself for being outlawed. -
Nationalism Spreads
France once had showed their loyalty to the King or Queen soon showed their loyalty to the revolution. The peole even attended festivals that celebrated the revolution. -
Execution of the King and Queen
The end of the King marked the end of a Monarchy. They were executed because when they tried to run away to Austria and were caught, the people was them as spurning the Kings own country. Soon after the Queen was also beheaded in October of that year. Instead of the King, she showed great dignity as she was put to death. -
Reign of Terror
Thousands of people were imprisoned and thousuands of people where executed because Robespierre believed that people should be terrified.People were executed for any reason. After the death and execution of Robespierre, the executions slowed down dramatically. -
The Constitution of 1795
The Constitution set up a fiveman Directory and two-house lagislature. The Directory had some problems with the Sans-culottes and emigres coming back to France.
