Louis the XVI calls a meeting of the Estates General
Louis the XVI called a meeting of the Estates Gerneral which hadn't been done in 175 years. Louis was forced to do this by the Second Estate. -
The Tennis Court Oath/creation of the National Assembly
The Tennis Court Oath was an oath that pledged the Third Estate delegates to stay in an indoor tennis court until they had drawn up a new constitution. The Nation Assembly was started after the Third Estates came together to pass laws and reforms in the name of the French people. -
The Storming of Bastille
On July 14 an angry mob attacted a Paris prison named Bastille. The mob freed prisoners but even more they wanted gunpowder and other weapons. -
The Great Fear
The Great Fear was a large time of snenseless panic among the peasants of France. It occurred after rumors started to spread that the nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize the peasants. -
The creation of the Decleration of the rights of Man and of the Citizen
Three weeks after the National Assembly accepted the idea of democracy they wrote up this constitution. It states "men are born and remain free and equal in rights", this constitution takes some aspects from the U.S. one. -
Creation of the Directory
The Directory or the First Republic was founded by the National Assembly of France on September 22, 1792. The First Republic lasted until 1804 when the First French Empire was founded. -
Execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette
Louis was beheaded via guillotine in 1793 after he was found guilt at a trial. His wife Marie Antoinette was executed during the terror along with 40,000 other "enemies" of the revolution. -
The Reign of Terror/The Committee of Public Safety
The reign of terror was started when Robespierre became the leader of France and he executed nearly 40,000 people who were supposed enemies of the revolution. The Committee of Public Safety was started to protect the revolution from its enemies. -
Thermidorian Reaction/Creation of the National Convention
The Thermidorian Reaction was a revolt during the French Revolution that occured becasue of the Reign of Terror. The National Convention was formed to compromise the constitutional legeslative assembly of France, the convnetion held executive power.
