Estates-General Formed
In order to quell fears of unrest, King Louis XVI calls together the Estates-General, each of the "Estates" representing a social class. The Third Estate, which was the most populous, composed of the middle and lower class.

Formation of the National Assembly
After disagreement over how the Estates-General would make decisions, the Third Estate separates and forms the National Assembly. The "Tennis Court Oath" was subsequently agreed to, in which they'd stay standing until the Estates-General's problem had been solved.

Storming of the Bastille
Parisians violently riot at the Bastille in order to seize arms and rebel against the king. This event is often marked as the beginning of the French Revolution.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man
After the "Great Fear", in which peasants began to riot, the Declaration of the Rights of Man is signed on August 4. The document declares the establishment of equality and democratic ideals in France.

Seizing the King
Parisian women rally and march to Versailles. There, they find and take the King back to Paris and successfully demand that he comply with the new form of government and his role in it.

War with Austria and Prussia
France declares war on Austria and Prussia. The purpose of this was to make known the ongoing revolution and stop those who supposedly attempted to thwart it with Austria and Prussia's aid.

King Louis XVI Arrested
King Louis is arrested by the Jacobin Club and others, and afterwards violence begins to ensue against those opposing the revolution. The king is later executed on January 21.

Reign of Terror
The government is headed by the Jacobin Club, led by Maximilien Robespierre. Here, the Reign of Terror begins, in which scores of opposers to the revolution are executed.

Maximilien Robespierre Executed
Maximilien Robespierre is executed. Afterwards, a new constitution and organization is adopted by the government, which is now rid of the radicals, and a Directory to lead it is formed.

Napoleon Bonaparte Takes Charge
After the the new government's unsuccessful leadership, Napoleon Bonaparte takes over the government by force. This ends the French Revolution.
