Louis XVI was named King of France after his grandfathers death and was the last king of France in the line of Bourbon monarchs preceding the French Revolution. -

The formation of the National Assembly occurred after the first and second estate overpowered the third estate in the estates general. They then revolted and created their own body. -

A pledge made by the members of France's National Assembly where they vowed to continue meeting until they had created a new constitution. -
Attack on the Bastille
Rumors began that the king had been planning a military coup against the National Assembly. The people decided to defend their city and marched to the Bastille prison for gunpowder. The governor of the prison refused to give them gunpowder so they fought until the prison surrendered. -

French Women force Louis XVI to leave Versailles
A crowd of angry Parisian women marched through Versailles forcing Louis XVI to end the nationwide food shortage and forcing him to return to Paris with them. -
Declaration of War against Austria
Many revolutionaries wanted war because they believed war would bring the country together, and spread the ideas of the French Revolution to Europe.This lead to the Legislative Assembly declaring war on Austria. -
National Convention is Formed
The National Convention was formed as the second government of the French Revolution after the one-year Legislative Assembly and the two-year National Assembly. -
Louis XVI is executed
The King was sentenced to death by guillotine shortly after his trial. He was on trial for conspiracy with foreign powers. -
Reign of Terror
The conflicts between the Jacobins and the Girondins, two political parties, leads to the execution of thousands of people. Maximilien, leader of the Jacobins, becomes the new leader of the Revolution. (September 1793- July 1794) -
The Thermidorian Reaction
The parliamentary revolt started on 9 Thermidor, year II which resulted in the fall and execution of Robespierre. This resulted in the collapse of revolutionary fervour and ended Reign of Terror in France. The Girondons gain more power because of this. -
The Directory is Formed
The Directory was a committee which governed France when it replaced the Committee of Public Safety. Eventually, it was overthrown by Napoleon Bonaparte where it was replaced by the French Consulate. Lasted 4 years. -
Napoleon Takes Power
Napoleon Bonaparte was brought to power by the coup of 18 Brumaireas as the First Consul of France, and ended the French Revolution to the opinion of historians. This lead to the overthrow of the Directory, replacing it with the French Consulate. -
Napoleon Invades Russia
The French invasion of Russia began on 24 June 1812 when Napoleon's Grande Armée crossed the Neman River in an attempt to engage and defeat the Russian army and it was a total disaster. Napoleon invaded Russia at the head of an army of over 600,000 men but at the start of 1813 only 93,000 of them were still alive and still with the army. -
Napoleons defeat at Waterloo
The Battle of Waterloo was the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte who conquered much of continental Europe. He was exiled to St. Helena afterwards and later died of a supposed stomach illness.
