    The Legislative Assembly became the governing body of France. Its first session began on the first of October.

    French Constitution
    The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen formed the preamble of the French Constitution. Maximilien Robespierre supported and welcomed this document.

    The Guillotine
    The first execution by guillotine was conducted on Nicolas-Jacques Pelletier. Because execution by guillotine was used so prominently during this time, the guillotine to came to be a symbol of the French Revolution.

    Mob led by Jean Paul Marat attacks prisons and killed around 1600 prisoners.

    The Legislative Assembly was terminated and the National Convention was created to make a constitution.

    The Committee of Public Safety, which developed into almost a dictatorial control, was created to defend the nation and oversee the government.

    Maximilien Robespierre was elected to the Committee of Public Safety where he became the most important member. In his position of leadership in the Committee, he was able to get the support he needed to go after enemies of the Revolution.

    The Committee of Public Safety passed the Law of Suspects that created a special revolutionary board to try the people suspected of treason against the Republic of France.

    The Republican Calendar
    The National Convention established a new calendar called the Republican Calendar, also known as the French Revolutionary Calendar, as part of their reform. They also created their own clock to make each day have 100,000 seconds.

    Robespierre is almost unanimously elected president of the National Convention.
  • Law of 22 Prairial Year II

    The Law of 22 Prairial Year II was passed, stating that suspected enemies of the Revolution were stripped of the right of public trial; they were either cleared or put to death. Robespierre and the Committee of Public Safety argued for this because he thought there needed to be more terror to enforce rules.

    The Reign of Terror ends when Robespierre was arrested and overthrown. The fall of Robespierre also ends the jurisdiction of the Committee of Public Safety.
