Louis the XIV calls the estates general
The people resented the government prior to Louis XVI calling for the estates general.The people were also starved because of the wars that ensued. Upon the king calling for the estates general the first and second estates had about 300 men combined whilst the third estate had over 600. Most of the third estate wanted to set up a constitutional government that wold make nobility pay taxes. Ever since the start of the gathering itself there were arguments about voting. -
Parisians Storm the Bastille
Over 900 Parisians gathered in the courtyard of the Bastille. They stormed it because is was a prison and horrendous tortures ensued there. Later the Parisians took the entire Bastille by demolishing it brick by brick. -
Writing of the Declaration of the rights of men
It was inspired by the English bill of rights and the American Declaration of Independence. It had rights such as land,security,
resistance,etc. -
Guillotine
The inventor of the guillotine regretted naming the instrument after himself so he changed his last name. Was considered the most humane way of execution. Its angled blade provided a instant chop, fit for a queen. -
Establishment of the new constitution
The new constitution set up a limited monarchy. There was still a king but but he would not create the laws. -

Murdered Jean Pal Marat by stabbing him to death in his bath. She was partially a figure head in the revolution. Many saw her as "unholy". -
Reign of Terror
People were starving which made them break into war. The French people were exhausted. At least 17,000 people were executed and around 10,00 died in prison or waiting for trial. -
Execution of the king and queen / beginning of the rain of terror
The execution reinforced the trend toward a radical era. The local government in Paris had a number of working class leaders who insisted upon radical change. The national convention itself did not rule all of France. -

Was very homesick while with Louis. She was very spoiled and was blamed for all of France's problems. Marie was later executed. -
Napoleon overthrows the directory
Napoleon was a lieutenant in the military. He turned against the government and overthrew the Directory in a coup d'etat. -
Napoleon builds an empire
As Napoleon built his empire he wanted peace, they created a peace treaty which didn't last long. Britain came back into war with them in 1805. Napoleon tried to over throw Britain but was unable to because of how well armed they were. He only wanted to spread the French Revolution. -
Napoleon invades Russia
Napoleon tried to invade Russia in the winter. He failed to conquer Russia since he attacked during the winter. -
The congress of Vienna meets
The congress of Vienna wanted to keep any one country from taking over Europe. They rearranged the territories in hope it would balance out the powers. -
Napolean defeated at Waterloo
Napoleon was up against the British and Prussian army combined. He suffered a very bloody defeat against them.
