King Louis XVI crowned King of France
Louis XV passes away leaving Louis Auguste to himself. Louis August was crowned king instantly after his fathers death and takes upon the name "Louis XVI" -
American Revolution Begins
Great Britain taxed the American colonies heavily and treated them unfairly. This eventually led to the American Revolution. -
Calling of the Estates-General
This hasn't been done since 1614. After France was having heavy financial issues, Louis XVI called a meeting of all 3 estates to discuss taxes upon them. -
Formation of the National Assembly
After the Estates-General the 3rd estate decided to form the National Assembly. They formed this because of mistreatment from the 1st and 2nd estates and unfair tax. -
Tennis Court Oath
After the 3rd estate was outvoted unfairly the members of the National Assembly took the Tennis Court Oath. A revolutionary act that vowed to not separate from each other until a constitution was made. -
Attack on the Bastille
An angry mob grouped up and attacked the Bastille, a prison, and freed prisoners and stole weapons. This hurt the King and the image of France because The Bastille was a symbol of power. -
French Women Force Louis XVI to leave Versailles
Thousands of women marched about a dozen miles to Versailles. They threatened the king and his family, causing him to eventually flee. -
Declaration of war against Austria
Obsessed with keeping power and with distracting the revolutionaries, King Louis XVI requested his brother in law to invade France. This sparked a war against Austria and the revolutionaries of France. -
The National Convention is formed.
The National Convention was an assembly that was in charge of France after the removal of Louis XVI. This provided a new constitution for France. -
Louis XVI is executed
After conspiring against France with Austria, Louis XVI was convicted of Treason and was to be guillotined. This ended absolute monarchy in France. -
Reign of Terror
Maximilian Robespierre, the leader of the Jacobin, caused the Reign of terror. He executed thousands of French. -
The Thermidorian Reaction
The Revolutionaries were tired of all the blood shed caused by Robespierre. They staged a revolt and overthrew him, executing him soon after. -
The Directory is formed
The Revolutionaries formed a new government. It lased for about four years. -
Napoleon Takes Power
Napoleon stages a Coup d’état on The Directory and takes power. He begins to lead France under a dictatorship. -
Napoleon Invades Russia
Napoleon, hungry for power, failed to conquer Britain. Therefore he attempts to conquer Russia. He failed once again because of the harsh, cold weather. Thousands of troops freeze to death. -
Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo
With Napoleon growing and becoming a threat to Europe, Britain and Prussia teamed up. Together they defeated Napoleon and he was then Exiled to St. Helena.
