Louis XVI Calls the Estates-General
France was on the verge of bankruptcy. Bread riots were occurring and nobles being worried of being taxed dennounced royal tyranny. As a result of this Luis XIV called the Estates-General and has each estate prepare a notebook of listing their complaints. -
Parisians Storm the Bastile
800 Parisians formed outside the Bastile. The Bastile was a fortress used to hold political and other prisoners. The Parisians believed that gunpowder and weapons were there which they wanted. In this case, the commander of the Bastile did not allow them in and then fired shots into the crowd causing mass killing. Eventually, the mob of Parisians broke into the Bastile and caused the fall of the Bastile. -
Divided French Society/Financial troubles
French society was divided because of the outdated social system. The three estates caused dividence between the people of France. Financial troubles appeared when deficit spending occured. Which is when a government spends more moeny than they recieve. -

The National Assembly issued the Declaration of the rights of Man. As a result of women not being included in the Declaration of Man 6,000 women marched to Versailles to bring back the king and the queen. The women brought King Louis XIV and Queen Marie-Antoinette back to Paris for 3 years. At this point the people of france were in control putting the churches under state controll and demanding what ever they pleased. -
Threats from Abroad
Two monarchs threatened France of intervening stating this in the "Declaration of Pillnitz" to protect French monarchy. The shift of power caused the Emigre's to spread the word. This resulting in Austria declaring was on France because of the french imprisoning a sister of Austria's king. -
Monarchy is Abloished
A crowd of Parisians stormed a royal palce of Tuileries killing guards. This forced the royal family to fle to the Legislative Assembly. Citizens attacked prisons killing 1,200 and to end the terror the National Convention abolished monarchy. The convention also developed an French Republic and drew up a new constitution. After the abolished monarchy King Loius XIV and Queen Marie-Antenette were both beheaded. -

The Legislative Assembly takes power. The San-oulots are radicals that physically show they are not aristocrats by not wearing the common knee pads. These San-Coulotts demand a republic. At the same time the Nationsl Assembly declare war on Tyranny. -

Robespierre was a lawyer and politician, he was also the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He beliebed France could only achieve "Republic of Virtue" with terror. He thought that liberty could not be secured without criminals losing their heads. In one of his speeches he explained why terror was needed to achieve the goals of the revolution. -

At this time the people set up a five man directory 2 house legislature elected by male citizens with property. At this time Napolean rises and the return to reason surfaces. -

The people of France developed a strong pride for their country. The government wanted everyone to feel proud of what their country had accomplished. As a result of the end of the revolution nationalsim spread to help the people remember what they had been through.
