Louis XVI maried Marie Antoinette at the age of 15 in an arranged marriage. Marie was only 14 years old at that time. The French people did not like her very much, because she didn't care about how hungry and poor they were. -

Charles XVI inherits the throne after the death of Louis XV. He was young, unprepared, and lacked self-confidence. Most of his decisions were made by others. He was maried to Marie Antoinette. -

The third estate had decided that they would form the National Assembly, which is a new government. They wanted to write a new constitution for France. In response, the King kicked them out of the meeting rooms. However, this didn't stop them. They decided to have their meeting in a Tennis Court, where they all took an oath to make a new constitution. The Tennis Court Oath was the first step towards change and revolution. -
The Fall of the Bastille
The people of France were inclined to attack the Bastille because the citizens were frightened and suspicious from Louis sending foreign mercenary troops to Paris and Versailles. Therefore, they wanted guns. It was significant because it symbolized that the people weren’t going to hold back. The Bastille was torn down within weeks. -
The Declaration of the Rights of Men and the Citizen
The National Assembly published this article in order to set out basic rights for the government to follow. It was inspired by englightened thinkers like Locke, Voltaire, etc. The document promised equality, freedom of thought/speech/religion/security/property, ended certain priviledges for the upper classes, and puts limited power on the government. -
March on Versailles
The Women’s March on Versailles was significant because it showed how angry the people were. The women were angered by the price of grain and the economic troubles. They marched to Versailles and demanded that the Royal Family would go to Paris to see what was happening. -
Louis XVI Tries to Flee
As an attempt to escape, Louis XVI and his family disguised themselves. However, they were caught and brought back to Paris. This made the citizens even more mad, and Louis was imprisoned. -
Legislative Assembly Meets
The new Legislative Assembly covened for the first time on this day. They met in order to discuss a new workable government. However, it was hard for everyone to agree. They were split into different groups, such as the Radicals and the Moderates. -
War on Austria
France declares war on Austria in April of 1792. Louis XVI had hoped that winning this war could help with his reputation. -
End of Monarchy
Monarchy was officialy out of France, and King Charles was now called "Citizen Louis Capet". This was a huge step for the people of France during the revolution. -
Death of Louis XVI
Louis XVI was charged with treason and was found guilty. He was killed by the guillotine in 1793 -
Death of Marie Antoinette
Marie Antoinette was also killed by the guillotine in October, following the death of her husband. -
Death of Robespierre
Robespierre died by the guillotine in 1794, and therefore ended the Reign of Terror. He killed around 30,000 people when he was in power. -
The Directory
The Directory was established at this day. They could give power to those who owned property. Therefore, the only people who could vote had to have property.
