The third estate was locked out of the meeting of the Estates-General and were furious and became the National Assembly and vowed to create a written consititution for France. -
King Louis XVI Relents
He gives up and orders the three estates as the National Assembly and vote by population on a written constituition. -
The Storming of the Bastille
This marked the beginning of the French Revolution when the third estate stormed the Bastille after they found out King Louis XVI was bringing in the military on them. -
The Constititution of 1791
France became a limited monarchy, the king became merely the head of the state. Feudalism is abolished, voting limited to tax payers, offices reserved for property owners, and this new government became known as the Legislative Assembly. -
The Legislative Assembly
The royal family was caught escaping to Austria in June. Nobles who fled the revolution were known as emigres. The two political powers at the time were the Girondists and the Jacobins. -
The Convention
First French Republic. Girondists who were the moderates who represented the rich middle class of the provinces and the Jacobins were led by Robespierre represented the workers. They faced opposition from Austria, England, Holland, Prussia, Sardinia, and Spain who formed a Coalition invading France. -
King Louis XVI is Guillotined

The Reign of Terror
Jacobins led by Danton and Robespierre in power. Those accused of treason were tried by the Committee's Revolutionary Tribunal and approximately 15,000 people died from the guillontine. -

The End of the Regin of Terror
Girondists believed the war was over, and the Jacobins didn't so most of the Girondists were tried and executed. Robespierre was guillotined along with other members of the Committee of Public Safety by the Convention because Robespierre was responsible for the Reign of Terror. -
The Constitution of Year III of the Republic
Convention was finally able to inaugurate its new constitution and it created the Directory. -
The Directory and the End of the French Revolution
The French became nationalists and military success led to Napoleon Bonaparte to come to power and this is called coup d'etat. -
