    Tensions with Europe were beginning to rise rather quickly, as well with support for war. Louis XVI and hardline monarchists were thirsty for war because they believed that foreign armies could easily overthrow the new government, and on the other hand Revolutionaries pushed for war to spread the ideas of the Revolution throughout Europe. On April 20th of 1792 France declared war on Austria.

    During the spring and summer of 1792, French goverment found themselves in a somewhat deep hole. Austrian and Prussian armies started closing in on French territory. Economical stagnation still was a problem throughout the country. On August 10th, 1792 a enormous crowd of 20,000 people attacked The Tuileries Palace. (Un)forturently, The two prime targets (King and Queen) escaped the palace. Soon after being put under arrest by the Legislative Assembly to avoid any more further violence.

    King Louis XVI's Execution
    After being arrested by the Legislative Assembly, actually disbanding and making a new political body named the National Convention around the same time as King Louis XVIs trial. King Louis XVI was charged with treason by the court and was found guilty. The death penalty for the king nearly passed and on January 21 1793 the king was brought to the guillotine and was beheaded, his wife soon was beheaded by the guillotine the same day being accused for numerous crimes, all which were mostly rumors

    The Comittee of Public Safety dominater Maximilien Robespierre and called himself the leader of the "Reign of Terror". Robespierre wanted to destroy all the enemies of the Revolution to protect the Revolution. From Sept 1793 to July 1794 approx. 16,000 people were assasinated by the guillotine. Radicals were executed along with moderates. At this time most leaders of the French Revolution were dead or fled the country. On July 27, 1974 Robespierre was arrested and executed the next day.
  • Rise of Napoleon

    After the death of Robespierre, the National Convention created a new constitution that went into full effect 1795. The new government pretty much at start were merely corrupt. causing political conflict and debt. They practically depended on the army to stay in control.In 1799 a miitary commandmer named Napoleon Bonaparte returned from a military expedition and ousted the Directory. Napoleon soon established what he called the Consulate and nicknamed himself the First Consul.
