The Estates General was an assembly representing France's clergy, nobility, and middle class. This was the first time this had happened since 1614. -
Fuedalism Abolished
The National Constituent Assembly worked to abolish feudalism on August 4th, 1789, by signing what the historian Georges Lefebvre later called the "death certificate of the old order". -
Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen
This declaration defines the individual and collective rights, and it is valid at all times and in every place, pertaining to human nature itself. It was directly influenced by Thomas Jefferson and General Lafayette, who introduced it. -
Royal Family Forced to Paris/March on Versailles
The Women's March on Versailles was what caused the royal family to go to Paris. On the morning of October 5th, 1789, the march began among women in the marketplaces of Paris who were near rioting over the high price and scarcity of bread. Soon the group of women in the marketplaces reached numbers into the thousands and ransacked the city armory for weapons and marched to the Palace of Versailles, which eventually causes the royal family to escape the rioters by going to Paris, France. -
Declaration of Pillnitz
It was a statement issued on August 27th 1789. It declared the joint support of the Holy Roman Empire and of Prussia for King Louis XVI of France against the French Revolution. -
Creation of the Guillotine
The guillotine was created for carrying out executions by beheading. It consists of a tall upright frame in which a weighted and angled blade is raised to the top and suspended, and then dropped. There is not an exact date for when it was created, but it's first victim in France Nicolas-Jacques Pelletier on April 25th, 1792. -
Invasion of Austria
King Louis XVI and National Assembly came up with a plan to invade Austria, steal Austrian grain and wealth, but Prussia actually joined Austria in fighting the French. As a result, the assembly suspended the Monarchy, they held new elections, and created a new republican constitution. -
King Louis XVI beheaded
King Louis XVI condemned to death for high treason and crimes against the state, on January 21, 1793. -
Rioters stormed Bastille Prison
Rioters stormed Bastille fortress in an attempt to secure gunpowder and weapons. It is considered a National Holiday in France, and represents the start of the French Revolution. -
Marie Antoinette beheaded
8 months after her husband's execution, Marie was herself tried, and convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal of treason to the principles of the revolution, and executed on October 16th, 1793.
