Convening of the Estates-General
A meeting of the Estates General was called due to the country's massive debt for the first time in 175 years. -
Tennis Court Oath
The Third Estate was locked out of their meeting room by King Louis, so they met in a tennis court instead. They pledged to not leave Versaille until they had written a new constitution. -
Storming of the Bastille
Rumors circulated through Paris, and the people were so frightened that they fought to arm themselves. They stormed the Bastille, the only pace gun powder was stored in the city. -
Great Fear
When rumors began to spread that the government was after the people of Paris, peasants ran through the countryside wreaking havoc and burning nobles' homes and any feudal documents. -
Declaration of the Rights of Man
This document was signed, and it stated that all men are born free and equal, and remain so. The document guaranteed rights such as freedom and speech to men, but not women. -
Women's March to Versailles
The women of Paris were upset by the price of bread, and so they marched to Versailles to demand bread from King Louis. When they were refused, they forced Louis and Marie to return to Paris with them. -
Louis and Marie's Flight to Varennes
Louis and Marie attempt to escape Paris, and make it very close to making it out of the country. They are caught, however, in Varennes. -
Constitution of 1791
Revamped France's government into a Constitutional monarchy. -
Brunswick Manifesto
A document distributed by the Duke of Brunswick threatening the French people if they harm their royal family. -
National Convention
Declared France a Republic, and abolished the monarchy. -
Reign of Terror
The time when Robespierre ruled France as a dictator. Many were executed, including Marie Antoinette and Danton. -

Napoleon Bonaparte Takes Over
Napoleon overthrows the Directory by staging a coup. -
Concordat of 1801
Agreement between the pope and Napoleon that stated that Church and government will deal with their own issues seperately. -
Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon sold Louisiana to Thomas Jefferson for 15 million dollars. -
Napoleonic Code
Guaranteed freedom of speech and got rid of priveleges based on birth. -
Napoleon Becomes Emperor
The people voted in favor of Napoleon becoming emperor, and placed the crown on his own head instead of the pope to show he was more powerful than the church. -

Battle fought between France and the British. Britain's navy fleet won. -

A document trying to deny Britain trading access in ports in Europe. -
Peninsular War
This war was fought between France and Spain, formerly allies, when Spain crossed into Portugal. -
Invasion of Russia
Napoleon decides to invade Russia, trying to win the Napoleonic Wars. What he does instead is weaken France's power, and affect the way the public views him. -
Exile to Elba
Napoleon is sent into banishment on an island int he Mediterranean. Everyone was angry with him over the Invasion of Russia. -
Battle of Waterloo
War between Napoleon, newly returned to power, and the countries that opposed him fought to take Napoleon out of power again. -
Exile to St. Helena
Napoleon is sent back into exile, this time in St. Helena. He never returned to power.
