French Revolution and Napoleonic Empire

  • The General Estate

    The king, Louis XVI, gathered the general estate for the first time since 1700, where the third estate proposed for the government to be constitutional. The other two estates disagreed and outvoted the third estate. This caused the third estate to declare themselves as the National Assembly.

    The National Assembly
    The third estate declared it self the National Assembly and would draft a constitution. This caused the First and Second estate to close the place where the meeting of the National Assembly would be, and thus creating the Tennis Court Oath
  • Attack on Bastille

    Attack on Bastille
    A group of 900 people from the third estate, attack the Bastille, an old fortress used as a prison and armory, and destroyed it. They cut off the wardens head and Paris was in control of them. This caused other people to revolt and bring fear to the king.
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen

    The National Assembly declared the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen, where men would be free and equal before the law, and support the idea of liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression. This didn’t include women, and caused the women to take matters into her own hands.

    King Louis XVI refused to accept the decrees that the women could also participate in politics and in doing so children where starving. Women couldn’t stand it and went in arms to Versalles, where they confronted the King and forced him to bring more food. This caused the king and his family to escape, but later they where captured and sent to Paris. And cause later a tragic event for the king.

    In early 1793 a political club named Mountain convinced the Convention to accept the recree of condemning the king to death. Later the King was executed in the guillotine and started a new republic. As well as the reign of Terror.

    The reign of terror continued to be used by Robespierre to bring peace and justice to France. But he became obsessed with bringing France to a none corrupted country and brought the National Convention to condemn him to guillotine.

    With the Directory having trouble to rule France, Napoleon Bonaparte was able to do the Coup d’etat and overthrow the Directory from the power. And thus giving him access to absolute control over France and be able to create his empire.

    Napoleon was able to create his own empire and become the master of Europe. His empire was composed of three major parts: The French Empire, dependent state and allied states. He was also able to defeat the forces of Austria, Prussia and Russia. This caused other countries such as Britain to take defense position and a way to stop him.

    Napoleon gather an army of 600,000 men to invade Russia, since Russia didn’t obeyed the Continental system. Russia also avoided fights with Napoleon so its people burned all of their villages and towns, so that way Napoleon’s army couldn’t gather supplies. In the end Napoleon defeated Russia but with the cost of his men. This caused other countries to attack French and exiled Napoleon from it. This lead to the battle of Waterloo where Napoleon would return only to lose and be exiled again.
