Beginning
Louis XVI takes the throne at age 19. Dominated by his wife, Marie Antoinette. He was a weak leader. -
People stormed the Bastille
People of Paris stormed the Bastille, a much hated prisonthat symbolized autocratic rule. This started the revolution. -
Declaration of the Rights of man
The national assembly adopted the declaration of the rights of man and of the citizens. Guaranteed the rights of "liberty, property, sercurity, and resistance to oppression" to all people. -
The great fear
The great fear, peasants were fearful that the nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize them. Peasants rioted. Stormed Versailles and demanded that Louis and Marie come to Paris. -
Bankrupt
Louis XVI's government is about to go bankrupt. Poor havrvests. The National Assembly is formed. -
Constitutional monarchy created
National Assembly dispanded so the new Legislative Assembly can take over. Creates a constitutional monarchy; strips power from the king and gave the Assembly the power to create French law. -
Three factions
Revolutionary leaders turn on each other. Three factions in the Legislative Assembly form. Radicals, Moderates, and Conservatives. -
Troops
Austria and Prussia, who supported Louis XVI, sent troops to Paris. -
Parisians invade
20,000 Parisians invade the royal palace. Louis, Marie, and their children imprisoned. -
Monarchy is abolished
The national convention abolishes the monarchy and declares France a Replubic. -

Louis XVI is no longer king. The radical Jacobins tried Louis XVI for treason and found him guilty. -
Louis XVI executed
Louis XVI was executed by the guillotine. -
The join
Great Britain, Holland, and Spain join Prussia, Austria, and France to fight. The national assembly drafts 300,00 French citizens into the army. -
Maximilien Robespierre tries to get power
Revolution leader Maximilien Robespierre sets out to gather power into his own hands. He becomes the leader or the committee of public saftey. -
Marie is executed
Marie was executed. Revolutionary courts declare death sentences on those that challenge Robespierre. -
Tyrant
The national committee claims that Robespierre is a tyrant. -
Reign of terror
Robespierre governed France nearly as a dictater, this period became known as the Reign of Terror. Approximately 3,000 were executed in Paris and as many as 40,000 were killed all together. Robespierre was executed on the 28 of July. -
A new Constitution
Moderate leaders in the National Convention draft a new Constitution. It creates two legislature and an executive body of five men, known as the directory.
