    Estates General Called ( Part 1 )
    • After the French lost the 7 years war against Britain, France was facing an economic crisis. France was essentially broke because of the war and King Louis XVI decided to donate the rest of their money to the UN because he thought they would help France, but instead he practically got scammed. To solve this problem, King Louis XVI decided to call an estate general meeting which was held at the palace of Versailles in France.

    The estates general meeting is a gathering of the 1st,2nd and 3rd estates where they discuss economic issues within France. During this meeting the King would hope to tax the 3rd estate , while the 1st and 2nd estate would just support whatever the king said. The 3rd estate was basically just there because they would always be outweighed in votes by the 1st and 2nd estate. Each estate only had 1 vote so population wasn’t really taken into consideration.

    The national assembly was a revolutionary type government that was separate from the ancien regime which was a representation of the 3rd estate. The national assembly was formed when some members of the 3rd estate decided to walk out of the meeting and declare themselves the national assembly due to the inequality and unfair position that they were in. The national assembly would then allow themselves to have authority over the taxation in France.

    The national assembly would then allow themselves to have authority over the taxation in France. The national assembly is responsible for many of the later events that happened during the french revolution such as the creation of the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen” .

    During the tennis court oath it was heavily expressed how much the 3rd estate hated the social system and absolute monarchy which led to the official establishment of the national assembly.

    The tennis court oath was held after another meeting of the estates general where the 3rd estate would try to step foot in the meeting, but was denied. This would lead them to walk into the nearest building which was a tennis court and there they would declare the tennis court oath. The tennis court oath was a pledge created by the 3rd estates that declared them to never separate until a new constitution was created for France.

    The storming of the bastille was an event that took place when a revolutionary group of the 3rd estates found out that the king was plotting to assemble French soldiers to take down the national assembly. This would lead to the storming of the bastille which was a prison that symbolized the royal tyranny. During the raid, the 3rd estate managed to break free 7 people. They also found weapons and gunpowder for their guns.

    This event is known as the spark of the revolution as it was the first event that showed how much power the 3rd estate really held if they were to work together. This act of defiance would be the cause of much bloodshed throughout France.

    During this time the king and queen were also forced to accept the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen”. As the king and queen lived in Paris their power slowly grew less and less with having little to no power over the people as the government structure changed overtime. This would turn the absolute monarchy, a king with unlimited power into a constitutional monarchy, a king limited by the laws of constitution.

    During the time of the revolution, France was experiencing a massive drought which led to the scarcity of bread. This scarcity led to many people of the 3rd estates to go very hungry with little to no money to buy bread and with bread prices at the time very high, it made a lot of people go mad. This led to the women's march to Versailles, where a lot of women who were hungry and mad about the bread prices would storm into where the king and queen lived and demand them to move to Paris.

    There it was decided and voted upon by the people that the king should be suspended permanently and after a while the legislative assembly was replaced by the national convention. The national convention is a group of people that nominates a new monarch for its people and this causes France to become a republic.

    During the time the king lived in France, the revolutionary army decided to declare war against Austria and Prussia due to fear of revolutionary ideas spreading to other nations and attacking France. These events would lead to outrage in France causing a mob of revolutionaries to storm the palace of the king . The king would be forced to retreat and take shelter in the legislative assembly.

    During the revolution many people that were suspected as enemies were put in prison ( mainly clerks and nobility ). As the war continued in France, fear spread as France could not endure their enemies much longer. People were afraid that foreign enemies would break into the prison where the nobles and clerks were held and would take their revenge. In order to prevent this, the revolutionaries of France basically massacred everybody who resided in the prison.

    Robespierre was also hoping to get the king executed, so he put King Louis XVI on trial for treason and was later on executed by the guillotine. 9 months later during the reign of terror, Marie Antionette would be executed by the guillotine to join her husband.

    This period of time was called the reign of terror and was also when Marie Antoinette was executed. The reign of terror helped fix a lot of problems within France, such as the food scarcity and even helped the French army to push back their enemies.

    During the war many other foreign countries joined with Austria and Prussia to defeat France. Robespierre suspected enemies and traits lurking inside France and created a committee of public safety to protect France from its enemies. Anyone that was suspected as a traitor or even said anything remotely suspicious was quickly sent to the guillotine.

    During the reign of terror as France slowly got back on their feet, Robespierre continued to send people to the guillotine. Eventually this backfired on him when the people of France sent Robespierre to the guillotine. Robespierre’s death was basically when the reign of terror ended as people who had different values and beliefs from Robespierre were no longer executed .
