Louis XVI crowned King of France
Louis XVI was the last king of France who was in the Bourbon monarchy before the French Revolution. He was crowned the position of king to a country who had a lot of problems going on already, France was in a great amount of debt already. He married Marie Antoinette, an Austrian woman. -
American Revolution
The American Revolution is the 13 American colonies war for independence against Great Britain. The American Revolution really played a big part in inspiring the French Revolution, it gave the French the ideas they needed in order to actually take action. -
French Women force Louis XVI to leave Versailles
The French women force, not only Louis XVI, but the whole royal court and family out of Versailles and into Paris. This was a really important turning point to happen in the revolution. -
Calling of the Estates General
This Calling of the Estates General was the first to called since 1614, and it was called for by Louis XVI. It did not go very well, which caused the third estate to break away and create the National Assembly. -
Formation of the National Assembly
The National Assembly is formed by the Third Estate due to the unfairness that they were treated with. The members of the National Assembly had to take the Tennis Court Oath. -
Tennis Court Oath
The Tennis Court Oath states that the group of people would have to keep together until a new constitution was made. The oath was taken in the tennis court “room” that is located in the Palace of Versailles. -
Attack on the Bastille
The people of France attacked the Bastille in order to find weapons. The Bastille is a very well-known prison in France, so the fact that the people could actually attack it goes to show how powerful the people of the revolution really are. -
Declaration of war against Austria
France declared war against Austria because they felt very threatened with their monarchy and because they thought since they used to be allies with the king, due to marrying Marie Antoinette, they would help them escape. Later on, other countries, such as Prussia, joined the Austrian side in order to keep their revolutionary ideas at bay and to stop them from spreading to their countries. -
The National Convention is Formed
The National Convention was made because the National Assembly turned out to not be as effective as everyone else thought it would. It was split into two “branches” of sorts, the Girondins and the Jacobins. -
Louis XVI is Executed
He was sentenced to death after having conspired against the revolution, killed by the infamous guillotine. The people thought that if they kept him alive, they would never truly be able to advance in the revolution. -

Reign of Terror
It started after the death of Louis XVI, the people had no idea on what to do now that they officially had no official leader. Robespierre was the leader of sorts during this time period. -
The Thermidorian Reaction
This is when the parliamentary revolt happened, which led to the end of the reign under Robespierre. This will then lead to the end of the Reign of Terror. -
The Directory is Formed
Under the Directory, a new constitution was made, the Constitution of 1795. The Directory consisted of two houses, the Council of Ancients and the Council of Five Hundred. -
Napoleon Takes Power
Napoleon overthrows the Directory in order to become the man in charge. He was a military genius and later became a dictator of France. -
Napoleon Invades Russia
Napoleon invaded Russia, but all Russia really did was retreat little after little, keeping him there since when he first got there, it was still summer. When time goes by though, it’s eventually winter, and Napoleon is still there, invading, which is one of his greatest mistakes considering it leads to his inevitable downfall. -
Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo
Napoleon is defeated by the Duke of Wellington in Waterloo, Belgium. This would lead to his exile to St. Helen, where he takes his last breath.
