The New Tax Meeting
The second estate forced Louis to call a meeting of the Estates General- an assembly of representatives of all three estates- to approve this new tax. -
National Assembly
The Third Estate voted to establish the National Assembly, in effect proclaiming the end of absolute monarchy in the beginning of representatives government. -

On the night of August 4th, nobleman made grand speechs, declaring their love of liberty and equality. -
Louis's Escape
The Royal family tried to escape from France to the Austrian Netherlands. They were apprehended and returned to Paris under guard. -
France at War
Austria and Prussia urged the French to restore Louis to his position as a monarch. The Legislative Assembly responded by declaring war. -
Louis tried for Treason
Louis was convicted for treason and then walked with calm dignity up the steps of a scafold to be beheaded by the guillotine. -
Reign of Terror
Robespierre became leader of the Commitee of Public Safety. He governed France as a dictator. -
End of Terror
Members of the National Convention turned on Robespierre. On the 28th he was sent to the guillotine.
